Making a Cubby Box

The box is made of MDF about 12 mm thick and seems to be glued together. Soft vinyl is then stretched over it and stapled. It is finished inside with black board, also stapled. The lid has a layer of thin sponge, vinyl stretched and stapled, board liner stapled on, and a piano hinge plus magnetic catch. There is an oddments tray formed from folded board at the front, left uncovered by the lid.

The height is 20cms. Width 32cms. Length at top 42cms and at bottom 45 cms (the front slopes back). 11cms back from the front there is a rail across the top, 5.5cms deep. This forms the rear edge of the oddments tray and also holds the magnetic catch. The lid is 34cms long so just extends a couple of cms in length beyond this rail, to give you an edge for lifting. The bottom is covered in thin ply and the box is screwed to two battens, which in turn are screwed to the middle seatbox cover. It's a simple design, which holds enough and there's even room for a radio.
