HENRY
‘Henry’, as this 88” 1961 Series 2a is affectionately known was given that name when Dave first owned him in 1981. Sadly he didn’t ‘fit’ in with family life at the time and he was sold back after a few months – long story! He was ‘re-purchased’ engineless, and with the chassis even more rotten than the first time, by Dave in May 2006, having been off the road for the best part of 25 years. He was fully restored in Dave’s back garden over the following 12 months and got his first MOT in 26 years in June 2007. Since then he has done nearly 6000 miles, on road, off road and greenlaning.
Pretty much original in many aspects with too many new parts to mention and a few modifications – where possible in keeping with originality but also with modern traffic in mind!
Dave knows much of its history (and owners) and it was originally delivered to Crisswell’s Garage in Newmarket where the first owner, allegedly was Lord Porchester who it is believed at the time trained the Queen’s racehorses.
During the 1970s it survived being submerged by two tides of the River Mersey having been bogged down as the tide came in. In true Land Rover tradition, once retrieved, all the fluids were flushed, carburettor cleaned some fresh petrol went in and......it ran!!!! Indeed there was still sand found inside the chassis during the restoration.
Like a number of members Dave only joined the Club after he had completed his restoration – felt a bit guilty after all the help he had gleaned from the site so joined up at one of our workshop meetings!

Being used for what he was designed for – offroading at Aldermaston

Henry – as he arrived in May 2006 after his trip from up north

After the rebuild – still clean and shiny!
