S3 - windscreen to bulkhead hinge pivot bolt
« on: February 28, 2022, 06:37:43 AM »

Hi, strange one, reassembling the series 3 now and have installed a Shielder bulkhead as the old one was more rust (and expanding foam and filler) than steel. Come to fit the pivot hinge and the old one is threaded new is just a tube.

Looks like the original was tapped rather than a rivnut but the new is wider bore already so that’s not an option.

Did series 3 ever have a bolt through there with a nut on? The new bolts I got are the length for the bit being threaded so am assuming that’s what should happen. Or should I just find a rivnut the right thread and whack that in?

Hope this makes sense, if not will take photos shortly

I've never seen a through bolt on a series III

The screen brackets should have the through hole and the bulkhead should be tapped to suit the shoulder bolt. Once that bolt is done up it shouldn't clamp the screen bracket so it can still be used as a hinge.
Not sure what thread the bolt is but likely to be a UNF thread.

If you can get a Rivnut in there then that could work but it won't really have anywhere to expand and grip onto so could pull out again. If you never intend to fold the screen down then a nut and bolt through the lot would also work.

Thanks both, yes that's exactly it, should be threaded and is clean - sadly with the bulkhead primed and painted and fitted its not going to get sent back for something that minor.

The screen will never fold down - it's an ambulance body so the top of the screen is fastened to the roof - so the only thing against a bolt is it will look strange. I might see if I can get a rivnut in first but yeah not going to be a fantastic grip so might not be best - will have to play with it

At least now I know I'm not missing something obvious and it needs to be something creative

Would it be worth doing a helicoil insert?

Was just thinking about a threaded insert if the hole isn't too big already?

You could also make an insert if required. Carefully tap the bulkhead to whatever size fits, M10 say then get a piece of M10 studding, cut it to 1/2" long, put it in a lathe and drill and tap the centre to the UNF thread to match the screen bolt.
Threadlock the M10 insert in place then screw the screen on as intended.

Helicoil sounds like a really good idea - I have never used before, but looks like easy enough to get hold of

I know the hinge bolts are 5/16 unf as bought new ones - so just need to find the diameter of the 5/16 insert then measure I guess. (21/64 if the internet is to be trusted) I'll have a look at lunchtime if that might fit.

Afraid turning my own is a bit beyond my skills

UNF thread inserts are easy to come by.

All joking apart, provided you follow the instructions, its difficult to mess it up.

Sadly the hole is already too big for the helicoil for the standard bolt - might still be an option if can get a bolt through the other part which is large enough as the original one is wider when it goes through the eye - I will have a play around in the workshop tonight

Somebody makes a thick walled threaded insert. I think its Wurth. I'll see if I can find any details. It may have to be metric though unless I can find a UNF equivalent from across the pond.

A nutsert would fit into a tube  ,as  it would bulge and grip the insides.

If you google Wurth Time-Sert, you might find that this sort of thing will do the trick and be a long term valid repair.

Thanks - they seem a bit less common and a lot more expensive but are out there - and googling has turned up the same people make big serts when need something bigger. I’ll have a good search and see if I can get one in unf. If not could be better to swap to the metric bolts that the later S3 had for that job so plenty options
