Gear box identification
« on: June 02, 2022, 10:23:51 AM »

As a new SIIa owner I turn to the knowledge pool of wisdom!

I´d like to make a proper identification of the installed gearbox on my "new" vehicle,
as I´m not convinced that it´s the same as the original one.
What do I look for and where?
- any links to a reference or pictures?

All advice to a rookie is highly appreciated  :o

Regards
Henrik

Hi, to find the gearbox number on a series 2a gearbox, youll have to look on the drivers side, i have attatched a picture of where it should be

it may be covered in mud and grime from years of living under a vehicle, so id advise some petrol and a stiff paint brush, or a wire brush if you arent too fussy

 :ditto

Here's another picture ...

The thing to note is that the gearbox numbering sequence follows that of the chassis numbering, but the numbers are never the same.

If there is no number, it was factory practise to deep grind off the serial number and fix a brass plate to the top of the bell housing.
Unfortunately there are no records as to what all the numbers mean.

The only way is to strip the box down and take measurements - best to do that anyway before buy bearings and bits that could be the wrong size.

I´m learning!
But is it correct that there is no way of identifying if the gear box is of a certain year or model without pulling it apart?

Take lots of photos of what you have as is and lets have a look. As Wittsend says, serial numbers do get lost, but lets start by having a good look at what you have got.

Super thanks all of you!
Will look into it more in detail and take some photos to share.
I don´t have any issues with the gear box as such.......for the moment but I´d like to know what I have to deal with.
Will be back!

Ask away. Can't promise to have all the answers, but I have a fair idea of what to look out for. It would also be helpful to know the age of your LR.

Another plea for folks to use "right hand side" or "left hand side."

to find the gearbox number on a series 2a gearbox, youll have to look on the drivers side

built into the bellhousing on the passenger side.

 :shakeinghead

Because:

It´s a LHD Series2A .

Which we were told AFTER I posted.

... and I think driver's side and passenger useful points of reference and then a LHD vehicle comes along ....  :thud

Likewise avoid "offside" and "nearside". Standard global motor industry speak is to refer to left or right hand being sat in the driver's seat facing forward.  That way it ceases to be ambiguous.

Anyway - now that's been dealt with, lets see some photos!

Just picked up,a pile of parts yesterday, and appear to have

A complete 1118 s1 box on a s2 bell housing, no side filler, but sprung cap and dipstick hole (dipstick missing- anybody got one lying around they’d like to part with?)

A 254 suffix f box, complete but with a supposed bent main shaft

A 251 suffix c box in bits

A s3 box in bits

So lots of ID-ing and cleaning to do, with the plan of using the s1 casing so I can use the filler instead of crawling underneath 🤣🤣

Finally came around to look for the gear box marking and found below text on a sign (sorry could not upload picture),
maybe some one can make something out of it........I can´t .
Any help on "decoding" this is highly appreciated.

Factory rebuilt unit
Part no. 607125RR
Serial no. BO3491

Surprised to see Factory refurbished on this car sold in Sweden....but what do I know.

Nice gearbox that.
I have the same one in mine, also with a factory rebuild plate on it and it was fitted way back before I bought the vehicle.

It's essentially a IIA gearbox but with a fully synchromeshed gearset inside it. I have never taken it apart to see what it looks like or try to identify what bits are what and if any of it is unique to that box but, it's a very smooth drive compared to the original non synchro 1st and 2nd boxes.
