Oil pressure gauge
« on: July 04, 2022, 02:01:32 PM »

Hi,
will try to install an oil pressure gauge on my 2.25 l Diesel engine from 1967.
Any suggestions on what to buy?
A gauge that fits in with the other standard gauges and possible a package with sensor etc.
All suggestions are highly appreciated!

You could go for a Smiths Classic 2" diameter mechanical gauge from the likes of Merlin Motorsport

Or search eBay for a Redex oil pressure gauge, like this one.
auction: #334476253483

The eBay link also shows the T-piece you need to tap into where the oil pressure warning light sensor goes.

Thanks,
like the design etc of the Smith Classic version.
But what other parts do I need to order, an oil pressure hose (length?) and a T-block (thread?)?

You need the connecting capillary tube - these days they are nylon.
You need the 1.5  metre length, although you might get away with a 1m length if you site the gauge next to the steering column (RHD).
Any excess tube you can coil and cable tie.
The T-pieces tend to be a standard size as the oil pressure sensors were all the same for a whole variety of British cars of the period.

To be sure, you can speak to Merlin Motorsport over the phone and they can provide all the connecting bits you need.

Extra info:
Petrol or diesel.
The normal working pressure in the engine, when warmed up is around 50 psi running in top gear at normal speeds.
It will never go much above 55, if at all.
A knackered engine will have below 40 at running speeds in top gear.

The engine should idle around 20 psi, a worn engine less.

A lot depends on engine wear and the grade of oil used.

I’ve got this one and I’m sure I had a capillary one kicking about somewhere
