Fridges
« on: August 02, 2022, 07:14:35 PM »

So I need a new Fridge while out in the 9x9 Command Post Tent. Mine decided to pack up while camping at the national meet in Cheddar. My milk turned to Cheese before my very eyes.
I'm thinking of a Compressor Fridge running off 12volts.

So what Fridges are you people using?
Make and model and Specification would be good?

I have an Engel, I think its about 40 litres, a stainless version I don't think they do any more, looks like the National Luna ones with a side opening lid looking like a mini chest freezer.  Had it for ten years or more, great fridge, makes camping much better keeping essentials cold.  I think all Engel's use the same sort of compressor motor/design, not cheap but work.  I have it in my 101 running off a secondary battery that charges when on the move, but the battery will run the fridge for several days without needing a charge.  Oh and as a party trick it can be turned down to freeze, amaze your friends by getting a cornetto out of the back of your Landy on a hot day 😉

We have a couple of Waeco (now Dometic) compressor fridges, just small ones in the Carawagons, 18l in Patrick's, 22l in mine & Steve's.

Not cheap at over £400, I seem to recall, but there are now some fairly cheap 'no-brand- compressor fridges around £180 the last time I looked.

As ^^^^  they just sip power, and can be used as a deep freeze (-20C) though that would increase the power draw.

I'm with a compressor fridge as well

Best with a leasure battery set up but they work and much less power draw

Strangely enough, I’ve just watched a review of a nice fridge on one of the Youtube channels I subscribe to, it looks half decent.👌

Been running a compressor fridge for years when camping.

Mobicool is dometic's goups range below the more commonly know Waeco range.

i have the mobicool FR 40 Which has been superceeded for the MCF40

https://www.svb24.com/en/mobicool-mcf40-compressor-cooler.html

Brought from SVB before the Dreaded B word ruined all the advantage of their pricing.  :cheers

Badge engineering clearly rampant. I've got exactly the same unit badged as "Alpicool".

Quite happy with it and it ran happily from Wednesday morning to Sunday night (rally plus there and back) on a leisure battery in the back of my 109SW.

I fitted an Indel B 30 litre fridge in our Carawagon and it has been excellent so far. I got it from APB Trading.

I’ve got an Engel fridge which has been excellent. Apparently they’re popular in Australia where they know lots about heat and the importance of cold beer.
It’s done thousands of miles rattling around in the back of my 88. Last year in Spain it was a lifesaver in the 45 degree heat.

Using the dometic crx 50 . Think it’s also sold as waeco. Advantage of it is can be a fridge, fridge freezer or freezer just by removing the freezer shelf. I run it off solar panels and keeps stuff cold and frozen, kept milk fresh and beer cold and ice cubes frozen all through the cheddar meet. Not cheap but well made.

Only downside is it’s a bit noisy- but it’s that well insulated I turn it off when going to bed and back on in morning and everything is still cold / frozen at that point

Yes, Engel or Waeco are the Two most popular over Here In Aus.
I got an older Style Waeco which I was given not working. New 5 quid aftermarket electronic controller and all works well.
from memory Temp can be dropped to minus 20, with the style of Condenser fitted.
If I remove the middle seat in my S3 Daily Driver, it sit nicely in between.

Thank you to all that replied. It gave me food for thought and my search was a long one. I looked at ads, reviews and videos and finally purchased one from Amazon. I've had it running in the kitchen for a test run. It comes with a 240volt transformer, dropping the volts down to 12. On the first night, it froze all the drink bottles I put in it. They are solid blocks of ice on a bottle. So now, over the weekend, I shall move it into the garage and start another test with just a fully charged leisure battery and see how long it'll run before it stops and saves the battery.
I'll report back soon.

See the photos.

I have been trying to find one for my camper van to replace the troublesome Electrolux 2 way. They seem to be the way to,go!

Just need to find the right size to fit hole.

  Hi

50 year old metal Coleman ice chest with frozen milk jugs on the bottom to start, then I drink the nice ice cold water when its just about melted then buy ice from a service station. Usually the ice lasts 3 days if the food was all prechilled.
