restoration project budget 20k
« on: August 06, 2022, 05:10:11 PM »

A collegue of mine, has asked, for a friend of his family, this question,
who would yòu recommend to restore to factory, a vehicle  that was regularly used until passing of its one owner  it is a 1959/60 swb and the budget is 20k
The owner has reciently passed, and left the money to carry this out.

Hi Ben,
Sorry, but I’m not able to offer any information on suitable companies to sort your restoration in your area - there are a couple here in the Midlands but I think they might be a bit far for your colleagues friends, and one I know for sure has a couple of years waiting list.

One thing I will say, is that they need to choose somewhere very carefully. I notice in your message you’ve said to factory condition. Any company can restore one, lots of companies can try to restore to factory but not get the details correct, and few companies can restore exactly to factory. It’s quite important to find out exactly what they are looking for so a suitable company can be recommended.

The only other thing to say is that regrettably, I’m not sure how far 20k will go for factory restorations nowadays. The chassis and bulkhead can easily set you back 5k, a decent paint job at least another 3k, but it’s the Labour that really adds up - they’d hate for the job to get part done and then run out of funds to complete it… worth asking the question of any potential restorer what their realistic thoughts on cost might be.

It would be worth speaking to Jim Gardner at Leaf Sprung Landys. Based in Lancashire but have a very good reputation. https://m.facebook.com/leafsprunglandys1964/

As Tom says if paying a company to carry out a proper restoration to "as new" factory condition £20k is unlikely to complete the job. Depending on the condition of the vehicle now a thorough recommissioning would perhaps be more realistic, and the end result would be just as useable. Shiny paintwork doesn't make them run any better!.

Another to throw into the mix is Rob Maude based in Oakham.

John Stokes carawagon is a beautiful example.

If you were in the NW I would be saying talk to Jim at LSL

The vehicle is currently based in the Peak District.

Within reason the vehicle could be taken anywhere in the UK for restoration.
Until very recently the vehicle was regularly run on the road.

63 years with one lady owner - it has "patina" and I don't think a 2-pack isocyanate re-spray is on the menu  :shakeinghead

I'd say £20k isn't anywhere near enough. My  current project will be over £10k in parts. No labour, no paint.
Garage labour costs are in excess of £60 per hour. 500 hours goes nowhere. That's my opinion for what it's worth
