There's no way I could describe my S2 as a "car" (short for "carriage"?).

It may have 4 wheels, engine & gearbox(es), but it's pretty *&%^$ far from just about every car I've ever driven.

A series Land Rover is a unique vehicle, being able to fulfil pretty much every demand that can be made on a working vehicle, other than travelling long distances at speed in comfort.  Something most cars can do very well.

So, it's not a car, it's not a lorry, so what's left?  Van, pick-up, small tractor, truck, run-about?

For me, it's just my Series 2 Land Rover......

No. However I deplore people who call Land Rovers - Jeeps and vice versa.  :shakeinghead

Incredibly common here in the States.   >:(   :thud

If you ever get the chance to drive try a decent one. If you try a rough one you will wonder why people like them.

I've been told the same about old Rovers!   :-X

Had a drive in a 1952 M38 *&%^$ a good few years ago. A real hoot to drive. Can we add folk who call a Series Landrover a 'truck' to the deplore list :neener

Here in the States a Series Rover is listed as "truck" on title papers and through insurance - at least here in Kansas.  Not sure about Defenders.

Land rover refered to the chassis number as a car number so presumably they thought they were cars.

Peter

Wasn't the Land Rover Station Wagon created to get around a tax issue?  ::)

Here in the US station wagons are listed as "cars", not "trucks", yet mine is listed as a truck here.

I love J E E P S  :)

After all, they were the vehicle that sparked the inspiration that gave rise to our Land Rovers.

I wouldn't necessarily say I "love" j**ps, at least not as much as the early early Series Rovers (don't care much for the SIII or Defenders).

When it comes to j**ps, just as it does Series Rovers, I prefer the older ones.  IMHO j**p started loosing its way in the late '80s.  Instead of producing them for the reasons they started to produce them originally they set their sights on the up and cumming yuppies and soccer moms, they saw the money and followed it.  Now j**p seems to have done what Land Rover did - create expensive off-road vehicles to sell to soccer moms and weekend warriors/overlanders wannabes.

Don't get me started on the whole "overlanding" trend that's so huge here in the States now.

As mention in the other j**p thread...

I learned to drive in a '47 CJ-2A Willys my older brother bought when he was 16.  When he was 18 he bought a mid '75 CJ-5 j**p; I was always "borrowing" it when he wasn't looking.  Other than my love for the early Series, the other reason I decided against getting a j**p is a no-brainer... just about every around here has one!!!  I like to cut my own paths, and don't like to conform.

Can't say I get too worried over this - life's too short  :coffee

There's nothing you can do to stop misnaming our vehicles.
If you have the time, you can politly correct them and have a chat over the vehicle.

Hi,

I'd join you in that sentiment, but I can't find the club forum. I believe anarchists  have a similar problem.

If I lived in the us, where I assume jeeps are as ubiquitous as land rovers are here, I'd probably have one* instead of a land rover tbh.

They're small, light, simple 4x4s. That'll do me.

*Or several. I guess old jeeps are like old land rovers in that you rarely meet someone who only has one :D

That I do...as politely as possible...  then all the questions start.

The worse offender is actually the mother-in-law.   :thud

J**ps are literally everywhere around here.  I can stand on my front porch, look down one street, and count at least four.  The shop I'm working on Grover in is about half a mile away so I walk.  I will see anything between 2 to 6 of them depending on the day.  Right across the street from our house is the local high school parking lot, no more than 50 cars at anytime and 10-15% will be j**ps.

There are so many they have become ho-hum...life's too short to drive a ho-hum vehicle.

You guys need to get on another   :chuff

Life's too short to worry about who likes what and what it's called. Just enjoy what you do and try to have what you like.

Hi,

What's to deplore? A GP is like any other vehicle, a lump of metal that does a job, and does it pretty well, I presume (Yanks tend not to buy rubbish. What they do buy might not be to our taste - and vice versa).

Me? I'd be happy to be gifted any Land Rover or GP.  Think back ... How many Yank tanks did you once hold in contempt, but would now be happy to own?

Inter-marque banter is a different matter, provided both protagonists enjoy and understand the rules. The phrase about "Kicking out of bed" comes to mind.

I'm reminded about the joke ... "What do LADAs and........?"   Sorry, I deleted that myself, and will ask the Webmaster if the answer is acceptable.

Well I still quite like jeeeps, by that I mean the WW2 type,  I made a tamiya 1/35 model one as a kid, and I associate them with , obviously the Normandy D day malarkey, but especially the LRDG desert mob, with loads of jerry cans and stuff hanging off them, which I thought were pretty cool.. ;)
