Strange brake bleeding nipple
« on: February 21, 2020, 08:58:11 PM »

Hi all
I have a bleeding nipple half way up the bulkhead inside the engine bay, I haven’t seen one in this location. Has someone fitted this, or is this the norm? 1958 diesel.

I've also seen these in the past, on early motors, never cracked one open tho...presumably just another perceived convenient point to vent the system,  ??? the series 1 blokes may have a better explanation as I'd bet it's a hang over from the S1...

Hi,

The RAF taught me to always bleed the master cylinder first, followed by the longest pipe.then the second longest, then the ... you get the idea ...

Having said that, I only ever met two vehicles with nipples on the master cylinder - Austin Lodestar (Loadster?) and Bedford SL/RL. There may have been similar on Bedford  and Morris one-tonners, but I never got up close and personal with either of those.

Both the Austin 3-toners, and Bedford 3-toners (4x2) and 7-toners (4x4) had massive servo-ed master cylinders bolted down on the chassis.

However, on all of my rebuilds, I have used three-way connectors to join two home-spun pipes together, with a nipple in the spare hole ... usually with a bolt hole too. Also, I did not run the cross-chassis pipe (under the gear-box) in one piece.

There is something like a 4 or 5-way connector bolted to the chassis, below the steering box, usually buried in "the muck, and the blood, and the bullets". Never throw these unions away ... they are stupidly expensive. I tend to run the pipes across the bulk-head, before dropping to chassis level ... it makes things easier to access - without the steering getting in the way - but the hot exhaust can be a nuisance if you need to perform road-side repairs.

Are the pipe clips (used by Land Rover) readily available?

It isn't a feature of the Series One 86" 88" 107" for definite, I cannot recall the feature on the 80" but happy to be know otherwise  :tiphat

There was definitely one there on my early 58, I didn't fit it when I replied the clutch and brakes. It is now in the spares box.

Just about the whole of the S1 braking system is below that level as the brake master cylinder is mounted in the (strangely shaped) bulkhead outrigger with the reservoir alongside the fuel tank accessible from under the driver's seat.  So its not a legacy from S1's.  The S1 clutch is mechanical.

S2/2a master cylinders can be difficult to bleed due to being mounted at an angle - does use of this nipple help bleed them?

Hi,

I can't see a nipple either (the story of my life).

Could it be a "Wittsend" clutch bleeder?

It is normal for early 2's. Dropped some time in '59.

It's on the brake line not the clutch ! The clutch pipe would be the other one going to the angle bracket...
