To give economy , power, but keep it “original?
I have a 1959 swb soft top with a dihatsu F50 2.25 diesel converted 20 odd years ago, but this 12 seater safari needs something cleaner and more efficient., but not changing her character!
Really looking forward to hearing from you!

Depends on what milage you do, petrol much quieter and refined but can be thirsty, a well sorted 200/300tdi powerful efficient but needs some sound proofing, or just fit a good engine that the vehicle was manufactured with.

Power / economy / originality ..... now that is a contradiction ......... is it April Fools Day already  ???

 Sounds like you need a Land Rover Tdi conversion  :tiphat

A 12J hybrid using original 2.3 diesel ancillaries including vertical injection pump, timing chain and tensioner etc. Looks the same to all but the most informed and observant but 5 bearing smoothness particularly when pulling away in second, excellent fuel economy (33 mpg on long run in overdrive) and no significant smoke on startup due to 2.3 pump being used on 2.5 engine. Little increase in power but holds speed on hills better.

Ran a 12J in our Dormy for 10 years seriously under powered and not very economical compared to a 200TDi got around 24 MPG. Put the engine into my SWB got around 28 MPG power was an improvement over the tired 2.25. Also they chug friend said he didn't need an alarm clock just listened to me going up the road at 5.30am.

So reading the rules  , putting a 200/300TDi wouldn’t ruin the historic status , but you would surely have to upgrade brakes transmission rear axe etc ?

 Land rover engine for another. will keep the status. The only up grade on the brakes I did was a remote servo. doesn't improve well set up brakes just makes
 it easier. On the transmission I fitted 3.54 diffs. I already had an Overdrive.

I was wondering what type of Perkins engine that is.
I know the 4203 engine but think that is closer to 3 litre

Perkins use a cylinder-count.capacity-in-cubic-inches nomenclature.
4.203 = 4 cylinders 203CI = 3.3litres
4.236 = 4 cylinders 236CI = 3.9litres

The Prima was 2.0l, so would have been 4.122, but I don't know if they actually referred to it like that.
