Parts Supplier changes price
« on: September 11, 2019, 06:47:15 AM »

Hi all,

In a bit of a quandary and looking for advice,

I have ordered some parts from a supplier.

I was duly invoiced with the cost and postage charges and paid promptly.

The supplier has now informed me that one of the parts are low stock and i will need to pay extra if i want the number i originally requested.

This seems strange as the part is still listed on their website as in stock but now at a greatly inflated price (was 2 euros now 19 euros)

I am considering asking them to cancel the order as I believe there is an integrity issue here on behalf of the vendor.

However they have all my money plus postage and the strange taxes that some European countries seem to charge.

Is there anything you would do?

I would tell them to go and shove the parts and you want your money back in full as they could not fulfill their original contract.

Can you buy the parts elsewhere for less? If so, cancel the order. If not, pay the extra.

What part is it?

It is part 269783.  I wanted to refurbish my pedal boxes and the price seemed good. I had to get a few other parts as well to make up the minimum transaction amount.

I have a feeling the vendor has realised he may have listed them cheaper than others. But really, i don't know this for sure.  the change makes my order un-competative so I may well ask to cancel.  I do not think i will be refunded the full amount.

I should have stuck to known vendors like Blanchard who don't revise their prices after sale.

My fault i think, I will learn.

Sharp practise  :shakeinghead

Withdraw and order from a more reputable supplier.
Hopefully you paid by card so a full refund should be possible.

:-\ If it's cheaper than the rest, then there's a reason - proceed with caution, be careful where you spent your money.
Never spend more than you can afford to lose if the deal goes wrong.

Interesting - it seems to be used in a number of vehicles - some more modern.

Also quite expensive:

That’s a ridiculous price for a piece of tube with a hole in it.

Xmod were listing them at 60p each, while they had stock, which is entirely more reasonable and in line with what they’d cost to produce. These people have them at under $4, and they should ship reasonably cheaply: https://www.roverparts.com/Parts/1536

To be honest, they’re a non critical part, how bad are your original ones that you feel that they need replacing?

This is currently a ‘problem part’ in that nobody has it at a sensible price for what it is. Under £10 on EBay and you are doing well.

Atlantic British has good prices but shipping to the UK is an issue - see recent thread re. the bolt I bought from them (they quoted $36 to the UK).

I picked up one from EBay but will probably make the other this lunchtime if I can find some suitable thickness material.

Hah, I made my last ones. Hardware store carries steel rod and cut to length and drill a hole in it. You can even make the tube they fit in.

Further to previous message I had a play with this, copying an original. First one didn't quite come out to my liking but I have figured out why and will make another one tomorrow which should work fine. If so I will post an update on Workshop Wisdom as it doesn't require any specialist equipment.

Haven't forgotten this - have now got it working to my satisfaction but haven't been able to take the photos I really want yet. Below is the finished article, made using nothing more complicated than a drill, a hammer, a cutting tool and a vice. I do not feel the current price for these is justified! Note, mine are deliberately short as I have modified the top of the pedal to stop the trunnion cutting in to it.

There is also the feel good factor.  There is real satisfaction in making your own parts.

Completely agree ^^^^^^^

This is the sort of part I would make if I needed one, but I have been doing this sort of thing for 50 years so have a barn full of bits of 'scrap' metal, drill press, lathe etc. which not everyone has.

There's nothing more satisfying than making a part yourself - it's not always a cost factor - usually it's convenience and time to get a job finished without waiting for orders to arrive  :tiphat

Yes Robin, the convenience factor enters into it too.

When my land rover arrived it was in a bit of a mess, one of the things wrong was that as the engine was a late S3 it had a cable accelerator but it had been bodged.  In returning it to the proper cable setup I discovered that the bracket on the pump was missing.  From a photo a diagram and being able to get access to the pump.  Using CAd (cardboard aided design) I was able to make the bracket and set everything up correctly on a Saturday afternoon.

We wanted a porch awning for the back of our Romahome and they are not available but from a £15 tarm and some scrap tent poles Vicky and I have made one, it will get its first outing in France next week.  No doubt it will need some modifications before it meets her approval.
