Another vote for keeping them on.  The vehicle looks better, to my eye, with them fitted.

I did run my 88" without them for some years.  I was very glad I had not binned them when I refitted them some years later.

Hi,

Sills cost money ... for what purpose? Yikes, you'll be wanting the return of trouser turn-ups next, closely followed by "shreddies" (RAF air-tex underpants, so called by the weave gradually acquiring a "grass-skirt" texture).

If I ever do another new chassis rebuild, I would ask for 50x50x3mm SHS rubbing strakes to be welded on the ends of the chassis outriggers, before galvanising. Maxbe even with cleats, from which to hang a hi-lift jack under one side, and an telescopic  tow-pole under the other. Or maybe not.

OT, but similar ... I reckon the appearance of Triumph Heralds could be improved by slimming down their "modesty panel " sills.

Rock sliders are good. You can get them with the curved ends now that look even better.



+1  Curved ended rock sliders gets my vote (that is why I fitted them!).  :cheers

Store the original sills to refit later if needed.   :coffee

I agree with your sentiments about rock sliders ... only I would prefer them to be welded to the outriggers.

But hey, they should look the same.

I must be having an off-day ... I can't think of a secondary use.  ???

Wasn't it David Bache who designed the rework of the Series 2 from the Series 1 and these were all part of the styling exercise to soften it up (visually) and make it all more rounded and less angular. To me, the sills are part and parcel of a 2/2A and I would vote to keep. All I wish was that as time moved forward and lessons got learned, that LR had made these sills into side impact protection. It never happened, but an opportunity missed and filled by those selling rock sliders. I've always thought that something discrete which looks like a sill but is actually a reinforced side section would go a long way to protecting occupants in a side impact. In all Defenders, there is really zero protection from side impact.

Although, Oddjob's picture of the rounded sliders is perhaps the perfect answer to what I'm looking for!

Sadly mine aren’t rounded, that’s just mud stuck to the ends.
When I wear these out I’ll buy the rounded ones.

Not many things look worse to me than a S2 with no sills. Non functional chequerplate perhaps, along with limestone wheels with DBG bodywork.

I agree a SWB looks unfinished without them.
But I did have a Series 111  LWB and it looked all right - the proportions seemed to accept the sills' absense better.

On I think, the few dents are just history. Taking them off looks too raw.

Strangely, that doesn’t look too bad. Probably because lightweights look to have been assembled from a random collection of spare parts in the first place. :wine3

There was a time some years ago when chequer plate sills were dead cheap, repro OE style sill were not available.
Easy to fit and if painted body colour, mixed in quite well, not so obvious.



The same "hate" went/goes towards 8-spoke modular wheel rims. These come in white and look a lot better when painted body colour.

Who supplied your curved end rock sliders?,  I have been searching the internet without luck. I want a set for my 109” The Mill Service ones look good but no curved ends!
