upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10
« Reply #3 on: December 17, 2020, 08:55:28 PM »

I've done many upgraded to Windows 10.

I find it very stable.

However I HATE the tiled desktop  >:D

I strongly suggest uploading the free addon Classic Shell
This brings back the Windows 7 look for your programs and control panel settings  :first

So basically you can bring back the Windows 7 user interface.

You lose Solitaire and Hearts games - but there is a games package you can down load and they will be restored.

:-\ One thing - stay clear of Windows Contana is it mostly likely to get you the Windows white screen of death  :shakeinghead
Contana can be disabled.

Windows 10 is fine. You have to put up with Windows auto updates (no way of turning it off on the latest versions) but if you are ok with that it’s pretty good, the built in anti virus is also good.
I think the ‘classic’ desktop is standard now. As Alan said everyone hates the tiles it so I think it’s reserved for tablets?
All the new pcs I’ve bought recently have the standard desktop installed.  ???

Agree with all the comments.
Totally agree with ditching the tiles, without it’s near enough w7 and fine.
My dad has a hang up with 10 and staying on w7 and it just causes problems now trying to advise him.

I typically put my regular short cuts on task bar and click to run. That simple.

If your at the clanky stage with your pc buy a refurbed ex office dell for £80, job done. Huge benefit and comes with w10  set up.
If you have a laptop, that needs money on batteries and memory, hdd etc, worth considering binning it, get a small footprint pc and a free monitor from somewhere and an iPad . Works for me.
iPad perfect for most things apart from proper typing.

Thought everyone had done this 5 years ago....

I've been on 10 since about a week after it was announced and love it, didn't miss 7 at all.

Not sure what people mean by the tiled desktop? All of mine have looked just like 7 after changing over. If you mean the screen that pops up after clicking the Windows logo, bottom left, you can right click on all the icons you don't use there and remove them or uninstall them and get back to a clean menu again with only things you need on there. I have links to my MS Office apps, Control panel, My computer, Photos and that is about it.

Only thing I have noticed, and I think it is a natural progression of Windows, not a Windows 10 specific problem is, older programs sometimes don't run as they should. I have the Land Rover RAVE workshop manual, that took some fiddling to get working again and I do have an old copy of the Land Rover Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) that I still can't get to install.

Craig.

The point is you have a choice ... ???

Like all things you have to invest a little time working your way through the options.

I finally did the 7 -> 10 upgrade and I'm the world's worst person for dragging my feet between upgrades.  It seems like EVERY TIME something breaks and takes days of fiddling to get it working.  But not this time.  It just ..... worked.   ???

A few things about Win10 really make me happy.  FINALLY AFTER ALL THIS AGGRAVATION, in windows explorer when you click something in the right pane it doesn't scroll the parent folder to the very bottom of the left pane.  If you've ever tried to delete a fraction of thousands of files on the right, and hated having to scroll the left back up EVERY *&%^$ TIME, you'll be grateful.

FINALLY Win10 has enough smarts to learn that when I delete something in windows explorer, I damn well mean to delete it.  It finally quit asking "are you sure???" and just does it.  I can still get it back from the recycle bin.

Win10 has aggressive disk space retrieval that happens in the background.  It cleans up your recycle bin for you, unneeded browser cache entries, and removes old unneeded tmp files.  It reorganizes your drives once in awhile, and just does some nice housekeeping, automatically.

Win10 has moved the goalposts one step closer to taking over the box, and eliminating the controls that we geeks have always relied on.  If you dig you'll find the tools you're used to, but now they have a nice layer of veneer.  It's becoming less of a tool and more of a pretty interface.

Would I do it again?  In a heartbeat.  This is their best release since Windows 2000.

Signed, an old school "computer guy" that was here before the Internet, has spent his employed career deep, deep in the bowels of computers, networks, national security and infrastructure and UNIX operating systems.

Oh no - how long can I put off changing to Windows 10?  I use the thing for many things including databases - but I really don't care about the operating system as long as I can work the bits I'm interested in.

How long is Windows 10 going to last before being replaced by the next system?
