No more daily driving a Land Rover....
« on: September 17, 2019, 03:18:14 PM »

Well, after 18 years and over 450 thousand miles, I no longer drive a Defender as a daily driver and have replaced it with this...

Not as practical nor as rugged but it must be old age because I am quickly getting used to the comfort and power compared to the 110. I just got fed up waiting for the new Defender commercial replacement so I’m going to run this for four years and see what Land Rover do actually bring out as a commercial variant of the Defender. Hopefully in four years time they will have ironed out any teething issues with the new model and the look might even have grown on me ( I hope!).

The Merc, despite what you may read is far better than the Navara on which it is based but the price for a pick up is still ludicrous :shakeinghead
So my Land Rover fix will now be my classics at least for the next few years

In fairness my excuse for not coming to the pub meets for so long is that im still doing my self-build barn conversion. As we have now been living in a caravan on site for well over two years, SWMBO patience is wearing somewhat thin, so nights off to go to the pub don't go down well!
Hopefully we will finally be moving in in the next month or so, so I may yet get to one before Christmas!

That is a nice looking truck.

What gets me though is "why".

Why do luxury and sports car companies feel the need to build trucks &/or 4x4 vehicles?  Why do truck &/or 4x4 companies feel the need to build luxury cares and sports cars?   ???

To me it's like going to McDonald's to get a pizza or taco!!   :thud

Just a few extra bespoke panels and assembled in Spain. At least the Spanish have been assembling vehicles longer than the Slovakians, so should know what they are doing.

Not sure what i'm doing wrong?

The insert hyperlink thingy isn't working like it did on the old forum.

Nice truck. Nothing wrong with a bit of Mercedes build quality and comfort. I'm a big fan of mine.

Well, I quite like it.
Wouldn't buy one because I don't need all that space/load capacity.
Lots of builders round here seem to go for them.

Maybe Land Rover should have been building something similar - there's clearly a market for these things.

Let’s hope it doesn’t fold in the middle, like the Navara did.

Let’s hope it doesn’t fold in the middle, like the Navara did.

I think that the above views are why Merc are struggling to sell them (Plus the price tag!)
The above view is true in as much as they are based on the Navara but in fairness to Mercedes, they have improved and refined them to a very large degree, especially the version I bought which has the Mercedes engine and gearbox and is pretty lively for a pick up with 256 hp and over 405 lbft of torque!

The Navara that rusted in the middle was the older model. I'm hopeful they have solved it with the later architecture!

Back to Land Rover though, I genuinely think that had they been serious about the utility market, which given the latest Defender, or at least the models released so far, it would appear they are not, I believe that a Land Rover pick up with all the off road ability that Land Rover could engineer into it would have been a great success but unless they could sell it at a competitive price, similar to say a high spec Ford Ranger, then it just wouldn't sell in enough numbers and that is the simple reality of it.

I have read that Mercedes are considering dropping their new (its only been available for around 3 years) pick up because it's selling so few. Most pick-up drivers/owners not want to pay premium money for what is essentially a work tool.

The Pick up above, admittedly the top model with all the option boxes ticked and including the VAT was just shy of £60k! That is a very expensive work horse.

In all fairness Mercedes have been building commercial vehicles for more than 100 years.

The Navara I helped lift the back body off had snapped its chassis - curiously by a bracket which was welded vertically to the chassis (Undercutting?)  No rust!
Certainly not 14 gauge steel.

Don't these things come into a less exacting emissions class in some places - hence their existance?

The sort of thing Land Rover should have been making for years - expanding into light commercials.
