Standard hood for a bronze green S2a - what colour & where to go?
« on: September 18, 2019, 03:43:44 PM »

I can't deny it any more... the canvas on my 88" Series 2a has had it  :'(  I'd like to replace it before the seasons change and the weather needs keeping out - the question is what should be the correct colour? I think the one that's on it is khaki, but it's so weathered it's hard to be sure.... what colour would a Bronze Green car have had originally? Mine is an August '62 registered car with matching green wheels (which I think is right, no?  ???)

I want the roof to look 'right' and don't need side windows etc. - what is the generally accepted opinion of who might be the best supplier for a smart new hood?  :cheers

Undercover covers are generally accepted as being the best, although the corners have shrunk slightly on mine. A friend of mine had an All Wheel Trim canvas and I was very impressed with it, I think next time I buy one, it will be one of theirs.
General opinion is to steer clear of Exmoor Trims canvases.

Under Cover Covers in Khaki for mine, it has been on 12 months and is a near perfect fit.

Personal choice but I think that khaki goes best with bronze green and of course when mine was built in 1958 khaki was the only cover that Land Rover made to go with bronze green.
Does anyone have any idea where the original land rover tilts were made?

I've had 3 88" full tilts from Undercover Covers over the years and all have been fantastic quality. All were "olive" in colour as they were for military Land Rovers. I'm currently rebuilding a (civilian) 1968 2A in bronze green and I'm tempted to get an "olive" coloured tilt for it, rather than khaki - they're a little more green. Will try and dig out a picture.

There used to be a glut of BLUE tilts about if you did not mind the colour and just wanted the rain off your head.

Regarding the maker, I wonder if its that seat manufacturer that did land rover interior but also chairs for the village hall and the like.

That said my 109 rear bench seats still have a cardboard label in the stitching that says land rover trim shop.  That is 1970.

Undercover Covers website looks abandoned ???..... they answered the phone though :cheers (new website being built apparently). Lots of choice with window sizes, colour and embellishments etc....
Does anyone have a period reference pic of a pre' August 1962 88" that might show what an original hood might look like? or anyone know enough to be able to advise? Size of rear window etc.? I presume it should have the leather patch above the fuel filler and a small rear window, but I don't know enough about the minutiae to be confident. I want an original look (and colour) for my old girl as everything else is period and largely original - I like it to look 'right' without being full rivet-counter as she still gets used as intended.

The quickest way of getting one is through Tom Pickford
Go on his website and the options are there.

My favourite is the sand colour but each to their own!
