2.25 petrol engine and ancillary parts colour
« on: September 26, 2019, 08:13:46 PM »

Hi all, I am about to start rebuilding my petrol engine, it's a 1964 for reference.

Can anyone give a definitive breakdown of the colours / finishes? I have the correct shade of blue for the block (purchased from Paintman), and I suspect the sump is black, but sure on the other bits ( head, timing cover etc)

Any advice or pictures great fully received.

I will be starting a separate thread detailing the engine rebuild.

Thanks

I'm about to paint a 1963 engine - and am confused!

I found this:https://paintman.co.uk/product-category/coach-enamel-premium-paintman-product/land-rover-stock-colours/landrover-paint-engine/

which suggests that the correct colour is the light bluey colour.  However the paint left on this engine looks to be light grey - similar to that on the block of my s1.  I'll have another look and probably go with what's expected - the light bluey colour.

Head is painted as is front cover (steel), alloy rocker cover is not.  If it was a military recon job the spark plugs, carb and hoses and the guy who assembled it would be painted.  I'd leave the alloy bits unpainted if they look decent - and leave the starter and dynamo in their own colours - ie black body and alloy ends.

An interesting topic, engine colour.  I think vehicle age comes into the equation.
I am in the middle of restoration of a 58 SWB and the colour of the engine block has interested me during the last two years of the rebuild, I have been exploring the numerous web sites British American and Australian, and they all seem to have different idea's of the colour.
The USA say a light green, Detroit Alpine Green is a good match Australia also agrees before 67 then Light Blue afterwards. I have compared these shades on a BSI colour chart and they equate to 14E51 and 16C35. and are very different.

  &  to the Forum.

It's a pity you don't have an ex-army vehicle - because everything under the bonnet was painted blue  :agh

Engine ancillaries were painted black - water pump, timing cover, oil filler pipe, sump pan, head, air cleaner ('though later some were painted silver).

There are some good pictures in the James Taylor books.

Problem is, after it left the factory the owner could have replaced parts and left them in their "natural" colour.

Surely Military engines were not blue,  Eau di Nil perhaps, otherwise known by my family as Bog paint as it was the same colour as my school latrines!

I bought this shade from Frosts reassuringly called "Landrover engine colour!" :- :-X
I've seen it described as Duck egg blue and "Admiralty grey" ???

I’ ve just done my 1967 diesel engine.

On this, the head (which came off another engine very close numberwise) was the same colour as
the block, the timing cover is the cast metal kind and also the same colour as the block.

So, for me I had block, head, timing cover, thermostat, water pump all blue
Flywheel cover/rocker cover natural
Starter motor/dynamo black with unpainted ends ( although the ends look to have been black)

Most of these colours were visible on the parts once they were cleaned.

Hope this helps!

Commonly known as Duck Egg Blue - Everything was painted that colour on the inside of a ship.

To be completely accurate, there are two military colours used on engines.  I know because I collect second WW british vehicle as well.  The first colour is much more green and is Eau di Nil used on Army rebuilds unto the 60s , the later colour is indeed duck egg blue.   I think if you found a series One with army rebuild engine it would be eau di nil.   Not sure why they changed or when though

Alan, I've not seen the head and timing cover black (I don't have the James Taylor books), I thought they were all duck egg.  Is this for civilian models?  What years was this for?

Any pictures you can post to show the part black part blue engine?

Thanks

I can find no confirming evidence - so please ignore my contribution.

You shouldn't be ignored. I have a spare head that came with a Series 2 engine, but indeterminate age - that had a black head. It looks more modern (= simpler) than the early one I found, but definitely black.

So, late Series 2? Early Series 3?
