I can't see a single Series II feature on it!

The numberplate?

What a pity, looks like a pre 1976 Series 3 - so under its original id it would be tax zero now.

That is the worst point of these dodgy 4 screw tax exempt cars many of them would now be tax exempt anyway. Who ever it was that stopped the exemption rolling forward back in the day has a lot to answer for.

And looking at the series 3 above the seller has sold a number of classic car parts etc so they probably can't claim ignorance.

Well it’s a bit cheeky to be majoring on it being a 1958 model for sure, but ultimately if the chassis is original, and the chassis number matches the v5 then it’s just a regular old bitsa, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I think the problem here is not that it's a bitsa, but it is being claimed to be something that it clearly isn't!
If it were being sold as a 'Series III on a Series II chassis' with some proof of that, perhaps it would at least be being honest.

But it's being sold as a Series II with a few bits of Series III on there and a question over the engine.

It is fraudulent I suggest.

More than likely the seller will just quote you the chassis number from the V5 or dash plate. Ask him to send you a pic of the actual stamped number on the front chassis leg.   That too still is not fool proof evidence as the chap from Holland who posted about his 1966 109 resto which is all S3 but had the front dumbiron removed and replaced with the 1966 one so the stamped number then matches the paperwork found out. It's a minefield for new owners, so much dishonesty from dealers

I've messaged the seller and asked for the Chassis or VIN number.
See what turns up

He says 141800928.
I've asked if that's on the dumb iron or not

Is there an obvious difference between a 1958 Series II chassis and a Series III chassis that could be identified in a photo?

He's just replied further:

Hi. Number is on the dumb iron. It must have been changed to look like a series 3 years ago before Landrovers became so collectible!
Cheers, John.

I knew one old boy farmer near where I used to live who had what looked like a diesel series 3 hardtop 88 in the barn but one day  I noticed it was on a much older plate (never really had a proper look at it before then) . When I asked him about it, he'd owned it from nearly new (bought in 1960 I think and I think  it was a 1958)  as his only farm truck (and an elderly david brown tractor). during the 70's and 80's as bit's wore out he simply went to the land rover dealers and got a replacement. Since the then current model was the series 3. In the late seventies it had an accident where a big tree fell on it, and the insurance company paid out (much to his surprise he was hoping they would write it off), so it got a new (series 3 style) bulkhead, dash, wings and hardtop roof. At this point the local dealer suggested (since the series 3 wings obviously now had the headlights in them) that he replace the front panel with a series 3 one too, rather than having 4 headlights, which he did, despite not liking the plastic grille. Some years later the original 2ltr diesel finally got beyond repair and a good second had 2 1/4 diesel was fitted by a local engineering company (safari engineering near reading I think?)
I often wonder what happened to it after I moved away, to anyone but the real enthusiast it looked like a series 3, but it was still on the original chassis, and as it had been done piecemeal over the years it had quite legitimately retained its original number.
