Hi,
I understand that Local Councils are complaining that their income has dropped due to Covid ... their car parks are empty.
The historic knee jerk reaction would normally be to hike the prices to compensate. (OK, I'm guessing).
But Joe Public has leaned that he can work from home, and his wife has got used to not going to the supermarket ... they deliver, for free.
When I was in short trousers, milk and bread were delivered by horse and cart, and the butcher employed a "smart lad" to deliver meat on a bicycle (with provision for a basket on the front). The baker's horse lived on a few feet from the back of the shop, with the oven just behind that.
You could have an evening at the cinema, followed by fish and chips wrapped in newspaper ... and still have change from half-a-crown (twelve and a half pence, in new money). Rickets and Tuberculosis came free of charge. ( I spent three weeks in bed, at RAF Hospital Wroughton, in 1964, with TB. No treatment. Then they told me that they didn't know what it was ... but I was now cured.
)
My father always said it was the Government's job to keep the Rich rich , and the Poor happy.
