Paddocks Paint
« on: May 12, 2021, 03:52:18 PM »

Hi all,

I`m about to order HMG Limestone paint from Paddocks and I`ll be using it on my wheels.

I`ll have the wheels blasted clean first. Do I need to use undercoat and or thinners?

And lastly, will one 1 litre can be enough?

Thanks  :tiphat

This was one of the first jobs I did - I bought my paint from Paragon paints. 1L of Limestone and 0.5L Zinc Phosphate Grey Primer. I painted on with a brush onto freshly blasted rims. Don't recall using any thinners. That was plenty for five wheels.

A litre of paint will be plenty for 5 rims - more so if you spray.

(Some people "cheat" and never top coat the insides of the rim.)

Me, I'd use a good etch primer as soon as I got the wheels back from the blaster ... de-grease 1st then prime.

Hi Simon,

Yes I should have said I will be brushing on. It occurred to me after posting that thinners would only be necessary when spraying.

Hi Alan, sounds like excellent advice, etch primer it will be.

Then I`ll just need some dry warm weather.

Thank you Simon and Alan  :tiphat

This is on my list of jobs sooner than later. I'm not sure what the paint code is though as I have seen several different paint codes. Also which is better method painting with brush or spray paint with rattle can? Thanks

I would have thought that a (big) rattle can would be able to cover 5 rims (at least on the outside).

Remove the wheel, place horizontally on something like a stool. Mask the tyre off and you should get a good finish.

Hi oilstain,

Well now we both know.

Paddocks have my order and together with a few other bits, delivery is now free and then there's our club discount  :cheers

Tomorrow is jacking up the motor, axle stands in position and wheels off day.

I have been caught out by a similar approach, but in my case he didn't bother with any paint at all.
'Cheat' is a polite word for it.

Regards.

Sorry if OT but-
I thought I read on here that you should not paint the outside of the brake drums as this might allow the wheel nuts to become loose but if you paint the inside of the wheels other than a thin undercoat/primer would this cause the same issue :stars

I tend to brush paint my wheels, all over, it puts on a thicker layer of paint and so makes it more resistant to chips. I even paint inside the wheel where the innertube goes after I once had a puncture when the tube got caught on some rust not long after I first got my land rover

One tip I picked up is if you are brushing, don't worry about the inevitable paint runs. Let them dry and then trim off with a stanley knife blade.

Never ever heard of this !

I paint my brake drums with proper full fat Hammerite of which I have a very old tin of ...
I don't paint the "working" surfaces.

(Note: I have drilled out the drain holes to 5mm diameter to better let them drain after fording and clear the dust out.)

Road wheels are painted and the wheel nuts sit in the hallows, so I can't see and difference if the back of the wheel is painted ???

With use the wheel nuts wear the paint down to bare metal.

I`ve heard that after powder coating the rims, the coating in the area where the nut contacts the rim must be removed. Because it may prevent correct tightening of the nut and over time could lead to loose nuts  ???

Looks like a tin of paint and brush is the way to go.
