OT. Tractor with no V5
« on: June 13, 2021, 10:58:22 PM »

I am looking at purchasing a tractor off my friend. His late father bought the tractor brand new in the mid 70’s and has been the sole owner and has been on the farm since new. It was road registered, presumably when new and has been in constant use for the last forty something years.

His father passed away a few years ago and my friend cannot find any paperwork for the tractor on the farm. When putting the registration number in the dvla website there is no trace of the vehicle on the system, which I was surprised about.

Am I potentially going to end up with a whole load of hassle if it is not on the system and potentially re-registering it? I only want it as a work vehicle to use on a house build so if it cannot easily be used on the road then I will probably look elsewhere.

Does the tractor make have an owners club ???

That should be your 1st port of call.
Said club may have the equivalent of our VRO who should know all about registering/obtaining a V5C for said tractor.

National Vintage Tractor and Engine Club should be your first port of call.

My dad's International tractor came with number plates but no paperwork or way of tracing it to see if those numbers were genuine.

As suggested, he joined the club for the local area and spoke to a chap there who came out to visit him, took some photos, looked at the chassis plate and wrote a letter to the DVLA saying it is a genuine tractor and could it be registered for the road as a 1963 International B-275

He received a V5c through the post with a non-transferable registration number assigned to it.

Worth the club membership fee for that alone.

Great topic this, as i have a 1961 IH B275 - with no docs or reg number (faded remians of paint long since gone) that' ive often wondered how i'd sort out getting a reg for it.
might give it go now.   many thanks to all above

Strangely enough according to some facebook tractor groups, the VRO equiavalent of the Friends of Ferguson is the "go to " person for all makes of vintage tractors

I'll ask my dad if he can remember who or what club it was that helped him out with his International B-275

Also interested in this - my 1956 Benford dumper would be much easier to get where I want it if I could move it by road. Might need a bit of an upgrade to the brakes first though (like actually having something move when you push the pedal!)
