Try searching internet for dogging. It’s a real eye-opener.

More seriously, if you want to try splicing, start with a simple joining splice between two pieces of rope of similar diameter. After that, progress onto backsplicing a single end or an eyesplice.

I find eye splices are the easiest to do and I really struggle with long splices

Quick sea story ,2 ships companies had a tug of war on the South Mole in Gibraltar,using a ships braided tow rope , braided nylon 3 inches or more square , each end had a hard ete and bronze link about a foot long ,when  released after the tug of war the ends shot forward injuring several crew breaking arms and legs hospitalising many of them
That's why it's best to avoid man made ropes amongst other reasons,
