I don't wave to any non series Land Rover unless waven to - and then it depends if I have seen it - I don't tend to look at non series land rovers

I am a miserable git though !

I've waived at 2 new Defenders so far - and the miserable bounders didn't acknowledge me at all..... :shakeinghead

I'll wait for them to waive first from now on.

I do, only because there’s hardly any proper Land Rovers in Oxford. Most wave back.

Hi All

Very rare i get a wave when driving the disco 4, unless they notice the snorkel and winch,  so why bother with a defender.
As for the series, i get all sorts wave lol, Series 1, 2, 2a, 101, 3, 90, 110, Defender,  Disco, 1,2,3,4,

But never a new Defender or Freelander, Range Rover, as yet?

Different bread of owners i guess?

 :cheers

Diffwhine, I 'm a bit puzzled about the underbonnet lever.on the Discovery 5 "to force it into neutral." Presume this is for the automatic transmission.

Short run only - it was only 2 miles max. The lever is there to enable emergency movement in just our situation or it would have been stuck in Park. I think what it actually does is release the Park pawl. Horrible car - not impressed... Land Rover's problem now - it was a 70 plate...

I don't care about the new Defender. When I was in Morocco 10 years ago in my 1988 Defender I was on the receiving end of a frantic wave and a great big smile from a French girl driving a Toyota Land Cruiser going the other way. mores the pity.

The L663 (I refuse to call it a Defender) has almost split the Defender2 forum in half.

Pretty much only those who have bought it or are intending to will "defend" it, and some of those are already reporting problems with the vehicle.

By contrast, there is a developing enthusiasm for the Grenadier.

I think I will wave at drivers of the Grenadier.

On the basis that they are less likely to be mums on the school run..... :whistle

I'll second the Grenadier, but for a number of reasons, I'm a tad biased... Watch this space...

I have also noticed that P38 Drivers have started to wave at each other now. As you don't see so many on the road any more.

An '88 Landy wasn't a Defender (yet)!  :-\

Correct - it was a Series vehicle or a Ninety or One Ten... Defender as a brand was launched with the 200Tdi engine. To be fair, LR applied it retrospectively just like Range Rover Classic.

I give them a wave Just like i wave at all the others Series/Defenders. A couple of times leaving work theres been one at the side of me at the traffic lights. He gives a nod and a thumbs up. I think he realises that i'm in the better vehicle.

The only L663s I've waved to waved at me first, both trst vehicles driven by JLR employees. I gave them a look of pity, they both sort of grimaced at me as though to say "yeah it isn't a real one but I like what you're driving". Ine was in works 110 cherrypicker, last time I was in Seb! The regular owners are yet to notice my series or Defender, and I pay them little notice tbh.

Are you sure Diffwhine?

An '88 vehicle would not be a Series vehicle, it would be a Ninety if it was a short wheelbase.

And as far as I am aware the factory did not officially retrospectively apply the name "Defender" to One Tens and Ninetys.

All Manuals I have seen  continued to be printed for "Ninety/One Ten" (some with "Defender Supplement") after the launch of Defender.

But yes, with the Range Rover they officially applied the name (and badge) "Classic" to the later RR's when the P38A came into production.

Equally, when "the Land Rover" became the Series One Land Rover in 1958, a newsletter was sent to Distributors and Dealers saying the first ten years of production should now be called "Series One". They never re-named the One Ten or Ninety - which should still be referred to as such.

Yes, publicity bods with little knowledge of the history, may have used the Defender name more liberally, but they will call anything, anything to get a sale.

They even call the L663 a Defender! :-X
