Mystery front grille
« on: October 11, 2019, 10:35:23 PM »

Does anyone have a clue as to what Land Rover model this front grille belonged yo? It is currently attached to my 1958 Series 2. I kind of like it. It is a metal, not plastic and i’ve never seen it on any other Land Rover yet. I’m beginning to think some previous owner made it or had it made.
Anybody have any info?

That is a known as a Royal Review grille, as they were fitted to the vehicles built for the Queen. I know they were fitted to various S2s in the early sixties and a batch of vehicles for Iceland in 1967. The grille is a Rover designed item and is rare.

That is very interesting, cool. Thanks for the info, i’ll have to google it a bit more now. I doubt it was original on my series 2 but a previous owner must have changed it at some point. Cool

Yep, there are at least two versions. As there seem to be no official records available we don't know.....

I'd hazard a guess that the Design studio (or whatever LR called it) had created alternative grills as possible upgrades.
They just pulled any of them off the shelf, partly to see what reaction there was and partly just to be different.

Regards.

Looking at it further it would seem the lower part mesh looks original and the top mesh part was a cheap add on. A previous owner must of sprayed it with primer as it looks like polished metal where it has paint scratches.

hi,

That strikes me as bling for bling's sake ... but presumably they are rare ... so worth ???

Personally, I don't like them. but each to his own.

PS. Imagine a hand of sausages, some charcoal .... and that grill.

Yes, rare! Only production vehicles I know of that had them fitted were sent to Iceland. A few ex-factory vehicles had them fitted too. I have only ever seen one for sale, and when I did I gave 58Paul a nudge as I knew he was after one for his ex-factory 88" station wagon. Interestingly his had one made of GRP which was falling to bits hence why he wanted a replacement.

I agree, seems Land Rover's aspirations for blinging things up pre-dates the RR Evoque!   :thud

If you want bling - have you noticed the chrome hub caps on the Queen's Royal Review Series Land Rovers  :cool
