... from the dawn of time.....
« on: October 08, 2021, 04:58:46 PM »

Hi,

My mate from Swansea wiil be dropping in over the weekend, so Barbara said I had to tidy the "study" so there is room to open the folding bed settee.

That means moving several of those IKEA drawer units ... what haven't been investigated for at least two house moves. I found me a couple of problems.

1. A three-year old LOTTO ticket. would I be happier NOT knowing that it won the Big One? Do they time expire?

2. And then I found a CAD 3 disc, which means I don't need (what the thingy is called) that is built into my latest lap-top. I'm still finding my way around it.

Problem! My new PC does not have   a CD slot. Can anybody (pretty pleas), tell me what I need?

Just make sure you get one with a mechanical eject function - even if it's the old paper clip solution.

Some just have electrical ejection and that will cause you problems in retrieving the disc.

Hi,

Thanks for prompt replies, advice, particularly what the thingy is called. I'll pass the latter to my Purchasing Dept.

Hi,

And now I've found the disc (MS Office, including Publisher) that came ... er ... don't know what I bought new enough to be included, or when, but it would have been a long time ago.

Maybe it was my first new PC, a desk-top??? Barbara says that was twenty years ago, but I think nearer thirty.  ???

will they still be usable ... and legal to use?

Of course they are legal to use ...

Your problem will be finding a computer with an old Windows operating system to run them.

Most old applications won't run on the modern kit.

There are emulators that will run on your modern computer and allow old out-dated software to run.

But you need to be a bit of a computer geek to get the best from emulators.

You bought it, its legal to use. I doubt it will be 30 years old, though it could be.  MS Office was launched on August 1st 1988 and released in 1990. That first version only contained Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Thanks wikipedia (Jan 2001).

I’ve given up on computers , my PC got lobbed because they stopped supporting Windows 7 and we use iPads now for all the tech stuff we need.
My leased laptop went back as soon as poss because it had Windows 10 and that was a pile of sh*t.
Designed for touch screen but they sold me a laptop without a touch screen. Serves me right for going to Currys.

Hi Betsy,

I don't get on with touchscreens ... they don't like me. Probably something in  my DNA.

OK, I can make them obey, but it's a struggle.

I'm currently running a wireless mouse, which seems to work OK, but it uses one of my rationed slots.

Windows 10 is hardly designed for touch screen. I run it on my work PC using a CAD system as well as my 3 PC's at home. None of them are touch screen and all work perfectly. Windows 10 is great to me, far better to use and more stable than 7 ever was.

I would like to try Windows 11 when it comes out but done the compatibility test on all my computers and even one that is 2 years old is unsupported due to the processor type. Think 11 will be one that passes me by....

You and me likewise.

Clearly there must be a need for us all to go out an buy new computers just when there is a global chip shortage.
I find W10 to be very stable and simple on my laptop. Mine is a Microsoft laptop, so if they can't get it wright and make it compatible, then nobody can!

Hi Diffwhine,

You are not taking into account the laytent malevolence of Joe Public.

The DVLC computer is programmed to reject all documents containing 29th of February, unless it's a leap year. There was a heated discussion between the main frame and the programmers, about a birth certificate showing an impossible date. I understand that they had to lie about the DOB, wait until the computer had lost interest (was no longer checking the DOB and was concentrating on more interesting stuff) ... then change the DOB back again. I wonder if it ever came back to bite them?
