Think the birds have got their own back!!!
« on: October 20, 2021, 07:18:10 PM »

The only Landy content is I came across this little gem on the way to the Yorkshire Sunday meet so sort of on topic  ??? not something you come across every day? Wonder if something hit it or it self destructed  :stars bet it went with a right bang, wouldn’t have wanted to be in the immediate area when the end of the prop decided to leave the party  :agh

Aren't they shut down when it's very windy? They're about as useful as a chocolate fireguard.

Hmmm.  As at right now UK Electricity demand is 27GW. Scotland is powering itself and supplying another 4.4GW to the National Grid. Most of that will be wind, with a bit of hydro. There is another .8GW coming from the Netherlands and unusually some from Northern Ireland, usually that flow is the other way.

Here is a handy "Live" link to the National Grid.  https://extranet.nationalgrid.com/RealTime

So is a decommissioned nuclear power station, but it has to be looked after for a couple of hundred years ...

Agreed but they generate for a lot longer and reliably, not dependent on the vagaries of the weather and they can be built in out of the way places and not being a blot on the landscape.

I think the eco warriors and greens have missed a (big) trick here.

Tidal power  :bright-idea

I just don't understand the thinking - tides are predictable for hundreds of years ahead and around the British coast we have some of the highest tidal ranges in the world (e.g. Bristol Channel).
Tides are a resource that seems forgotten. I bet tides hardly get a mention in this climate conference coming up  :'(

I watched a programme many many years ago which ran a competition to evaluate the best method of harvesting wave power and the upshot was that the reciprocal nature of wave motion combined with the amount of stone and debris that gets chucked around meant it is difficult to build a mechanism strong enough to withstand the pounding that it would get. I also remember something about an underwater water mill in the mouth of Strangford Loch, I’m not sure whether that was ever built or not but the complaints about it mainly revolved (sic) around the damage that would be inflicted on the passing wildlife.

Don't waves need wind ???

... and they don't seem to be that bothered about the effect of wind turbines on wild life (birds).

Tidal rise & fall is different.

Surely if we can send robot rovers to Mars and land on comets man could devise something to protect wild life (fish) from tidal mills ???
It must be worth investing some of our tax money to see what could be done.

In my first few years on this planet I lived in a.watetmill. It had a wheel which used to be used to generate electricity for the mill and the manor house nearby. The wheel was still serviceable and I used under parental supervision watch it.

Google the Tidal system being installed in the Pentland Firth. Only a few turbines in place at the moment but a lot more planned....

https://www.nsenergybusiness.com/projects/meygen-tidal-power-project/

The site has the potential to supply 8% of the entire UK demand, absolutely reliably.

Not really, all bar two of the current crop are approaching "end of life" and decommissioning will not be easy or fast. "Out of the way" - does that include right by the A1 30 miles south of Edinburgh ? Due to close in 2023 it life was extended to 2030....but cracks have started appearing 6 years earlier than EDF forecast

Torness Nuclear Power Plant.
