Sorry, I couldn't find the appropriate thread.

Overview

You do not need a licence to drive a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair, but you may have to register it. Only certain types can be driven on the road. The law calls these types of vehicles ‘invalid carriages’.

Mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs come in 2 categories:

‘class 2 invalid carriages’ - these cannot be used on the road (except where there is not a pavement) and have a maximum speed of 4mph.

You do not need to register a class 2 invalid carriage.

‘class 3 invalid carriages’ - these can be used on the road, and have a maximum speed of 4mph off the road, and 8mph on the road

You must register class 3 invalid carriages.

You must be 14 or over to drive a class 3 invalid carriage.

What is the reason of such registeration?
are they insured for 3rd party risks?
I take it that no test is required?
If no test/insurance/licence I do wonder about the risks to the driver and other road users

Rules for class 3 invalid carriages

The law calls mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs that can be used on the road ‘class 3 invalid carriages’. They must have the following features:

a maximum unladen weight of 150kg
a maximum width of 0.85 metres
a device to limit its speed to 4mph
a maximum speed of 8mph
an efficient braking system
front and rear lights and reflectors
direction indicators able to operate as a hazard warning signal
an audible horn
a rear view mirror
an amber flashing light if it’s used on a dual carriageway

Only class 3 mobility scooters need to be registered
If yours does not have the above it is not class 3

Hi Beast,

Thanks for that ... Barbara obviously doesn't fit into that catergory. Her buggy is not fast, but seems capable of 5G acceleration from a standstill. Scarey! It can also burn a hole in the carpet, if progress is blocked by a door frame. It demolished one of those "church hall" type folding chairs, that jumped in front it.

OT ... many years ago, I followed a procession of those AC three-wheeler invalid carriages (that were impossible to be driven by ordinary mortals ... I think Clarkson tried) for several miles along the M4 ... where they were not permitted.

I'd quite like one of those tiller steered, 175cc two stoke powered, invalid carriages that were common on the roads just after WW2,. They occasionally appear on Ebay.
