Original wheels
« on: January 17, 2022, 05:39:43 PM »

Hi all, I am new to the forum so not sure how it works so please bear with me.
I want to replace  eight spoke wheels on my 1968 88in 2a for original wheels.
I think the original wheels part number ends in 601, I recently bought four wheels at the Newbury show ground last autumn and all four have different part numbers, they all looked the same to me but on a closer examination when I got them home three of them where slightly wider. Only one of them had the part number ending in 601. One of the wheels had FV before the part number. Can anyone tell me what wheels I can use and where I might source some secondhand ones?

Regards, Jake G

Out of curiosity... would you be willing to share a pic eight spoked ones?

The following might help.

Yes I would be happy to post a picture of the eight spoke wheel but it's night time here so will do it tomorrow.

There are literally millions of old landrover rims out there ,  on the forum there is a list of part nos somewhere , FV  prefix is Fighting Vehicle  ex military , Defender rims are available new , available as tubeless , older rivetted rims are for tubed tyres , depends how original you want to be , the tubeless Defender rims 5.5 in wide look very similar to the swb tubed rims but allow modern  tyres to be fitted , , a pic of a Defender wheel attached ,

Hi Jake,

I suppose that you realise that SWB rims are different from LWB? They can be different off-sets on LWB rims too.

Personally, I prefer the look of LWB "outset" rims on a SWB, although on a SWB, I prefer LWB wheels fitted with 105 (115) by 80 profile, or even 135 by 80 profile, as the fill the wheel-arches more convincingly.

A SWB with LWB tyres looks mildly butch. A LWB on SWB tyres looks emasculated.

I have fitted Discovery "van" wheels on an S2, and my LWB S2TD was fitted with 145 knobbly tyres. Unfortunately, I only have one snap of that truck ... I was actually photographing our "ruin in France". I will try to look it out.

Hi Jake,

I can't help but notice your badge says "two wheel drive light utility"

I am sure there was someone asking about these recently.

Is yours a 2 wheel drive?

Cheers

105 tyres would only be about 4" wide! should all those sizes be 2xx rather than 1xx?

Hi Herald,

Did I say 105s? Oops! I meant 205s, although my S2 TD was running on 245 chunkies. I don't know if I can find a photo. It pulled like a train, even on RR diffs, but did'nt like doing hill starts, in HI, with a ton trailer on the hook.

Er ... OT, many years ago somebody converted a Herald to battery power, but I can't remember where the article appeared. It might have been the Sports Six magazine, or maybe some kit-car/hot rod magazine. Do you have any ideas?

No, but I have a copy somewhere of a magazine describing a Climax engined Herald.

Seems Jack Brabham was involved:

There seem to be several companies offering electric conversions nowadays.
