Anything interesting ???

A trip to the Tip ( or Coup, here) with an old oven, assorted broken electricals and bags of general waste, a reasonable trailer load. Raining, a cheery chap wielding an umbrella on the gate, had a cursory look in the trailer, asked if there was any paint or oil, pointed me towards an empty bay with sensible reversing space behind it. Skips for metal, Timber, Garden waste and general landfill, containers for electricals, a space specific to fridges & freezers, a cage for gas bottles, a space for rubble/hardcore and a large pile of free compost, fill your own container.s..
Noted that the rusted out old barrows had gone, replaced with flat trollies in various sizes. Very handy. Mentioned it to the guy on the gate who said it was his idea "The barrows were a health hazard, its my Coup, I'll look after it".
Decent attitude and yes the place was neat and tidy, ....not looking like a tip !
"Callander Amenity Site", open every weekday evening 5-8 and again on Sat morning. 10/10.

Great to hear this Gene! Might be useful to feed your comments through to those responsible for the tip (with a copy for "cheery chap"), and to whoever provides the service. I did this at our tip, and have never had a day's problem in over 20 years of using it.
How are Tips organised in Scotland? Is it the same as England, where they are a County Council's responsibility, but are outsourced to private waste contractors?
-
^^^^ Stirling Council runs its own waste operation, I'm not sure about the other 31 "Local" Authorities.
....and yes, I've already asked who I should be sending a "well done" email to.

It lives... Arrived here as a non runner with a desperate need for a new chassis and bulkhead early last year. Finally got the engine running today. Haven't actually touched the engine or gearbox. Engine a bit rumbly so probably heading for a bottom end rebuild, but aside from that it runs like a sewing machine. Really smooth and sweet, so almost there. Just got to build up some doors, fix the seat box and under seat locker and then the de-snagging process can begin. Everything else has been rebuilt, but the brief was to keep as much of the old LR character as possible.
I finally might be about to get my workshop back!
-
Only slight issue is that I reworked the original springs, so it sits up nicely now. So nicely that I'll have to let the tyres down to get it out of the workshop...
-
^^^^ Superb !!

A little wing adjustment.

a 160 mile round trip to Ely and back,.

A 150 mile round trip to Fife and the "Bacon & Brakes" Classic Car meet. 4-5 S2C members in attendance and a couple of other Landrovers including a genuine Camel Trophy 90. There must have been well over 100 other Classics there, people milling about chatting, a lovely morning. I found myself parked almost beside a Jaguar XK supposedly once owned by Liz Taylor, or was it Richard Burton....
-
Stripped the remaining gearbox of the four bought for bits last week.
Think I found the reason for the ‘not working’ one 🤣🤣
Made a transfer box dipstick from a spare engine one and some spare fuel fittings 😎
-
Had a run down the Clyde valley to pick up some garden stuff, got a friendly wave from a guy in a nice Triumph Stag in British racing green and another wave from someone in a VW Golf GTI Mk2.
Smiling all the way there and all the way back :RHD but then had to plant the stuff.... :hummm

Not today but Friday and Saturday spent the days at Heskin Steam and Vintage Show on the club stand. Weather was initially wet on friday and think that put a few off plus it's normally a two day event but this year with the extra bank holidays they stretched it to four days. Was nice to catch up with some old faces and a couple of days out in the fresh air.
-
I can agree with Andy as I was there too, on my own on the Friday and with my family on the Saturday. I managed to find a 1 pint mug with a picture of a S2 on it and an Optimus 8R almost brand new (but probably 40 years old) at a sensible price.
There was a Faun Goliath 8 wheeled tractor unit there. The biggest road going one I have ever seen - it's fuel consumption 2mpg. It was the one shown in the photo

Mine went in for it's MOT today and came out with another twelve month ticket. although a couple of advisories to sort for next time. And first time ever it was also mentioned as an advisory about the underseal. I do understand why, just never been mentioned before.
Peter I do have a photograph of Goliath and will upload along with some of Land Rover.
-
Photographs of Goliath, theres at least five clearance from ground to the top of the wheel arch. Also a few others the British Steel lorry had been turned into a camper.
-
Got my cylinder head back from the engineering shop.
New everything :first
-
Beautiful. Worth every penny in my mind.
-
After some paint I have the head back on :cheers

Went for a drive :RHD to check the overdrive. With it 'out' no more than the usual noises. With it 'in' there was the sound of meshing gears but only at about 30 mph and above. Slower speeds and it seemed fairly quiet. I think therefore that it's OK and the noises are from the gears bedding themselves in as they were disturbed from their previous meshing when I rebuilt it. I'll run it for a few miles and see if the noise decreases, or I might just get used to it.

Fitted the injectors ...
I don't remember this "gap".
The injector(s) can't go in any further.
The ends are sitting on the correct copper and steel washers.
I assume this is correct, can someone please confirm ???
Then I can bolt them down.
-
I know mine is an earlyish Ser 111 but I have the same injectors, and gap, Alan.
-
Thanks for the confirmation - I shall crack on with the rebuild.
:cheers

Collected a “lightweight” chassis for a friend!
Sat behind a lorry all the way back down the A1 doing 56mph and did the best part of 40mpg with that on the roof!

Used it as a shed, to store the strimmer out of the rain showers. Saves taking the strimmer back to the actual shed every time it rains
:bright-idea
Edit. Loss of the little bolt holding the blade guard on stops play. It looks to be something silly like M5. Of course I have lots of M6 and 1/4 UNF but they are just that bit too big. That old-school Hardware shop is what i need now.... Same issue has happened before. This time I'll loctite the bolt in place !

You know when you are looking forward to a little job. Short in time needed but big in satisfaction .
So i went to replace the oil in our 2a resto last night.
To get to the point couldn't get the sump plug to move.
Its going to need my half inch socket bar with an extension surely thats not right.
i even phoned my mechanic mate up to check it wasn't left hand thread ( cant print his reply )
So relieved my frustration with a little body sanding
-
Was it your "mechanic mate" that tightened it up in the first place?
-
Try some heat?

Packing for the SW camping weekend.

The sump plug is "normal" thread - turn anti-clockwise to undo.
Very important to have the correct size socket - nothing sloppy.
Heat and Plus gas should help.
When fitting the (new) sump plug, use a new copper washer. It should only need hand tightening and a bit more with a hand spanner.
No extension bars needed :shakeinghead
If it's leaking oil, you probably have some grit in the threads or damaged threads.
:oil spill

It's beginning to look a lot like an engine now ....

That's a little confusing in these circumstances.
Because the sump plug points upwards, to loosen it (the action required here) the plug needs to turn clockwise, as viewed from beneath the car.
Regards.

No, no, no. You only use a ratchet spanner one way to undo bolts, whatever their orientation.
-
Fitted 2 headlight relays, and ordered a new battery, as the existing only has 12v in it, even after charging.

??? Lying under the vehicle you will still be turning the plug anti-clockwise when looking at it.

Except on some left hand side wheel and hub fasteners on old British sports cars (left hand thread to prevent them undoing themselves when going forwards - not sure about reversing?)
Oops - OT again.......

-
We will have to rein you in...! Yes... plenty of examples which disprove that rhyme, but if anybody can show me an engine sump plug that undoes clockwise, I might be forced to jemmy open my wallet and buy them a pint.
-
Hmmmm.....
If the plug's on the left side of the sump and for some reason you crawl under from the right, it will appear from your frame of reference as if you're turning the plug clockwise to undo it. From the plug's point of view it still turns anticlockwise.
Of course if your garage's clock is one of these.....

I need a new clock for the garage. Where did you get it Herald1360. Am I right in assuming you have a Triumph Herald 13/60?!

Made it to the SW camp then the alternater ceased up solid coming in the gates :thud

Got myself a little rubber stamp of my LR taken from a picture, which i ordered on a whim and wasn't expecting much tbh. Very pleased with the detail, although my wife didn't share that view when I used her bare arm as a testing surface... :tiphat
-
Had severe Spaniel trouble... Liver and White Springer appeared in the house with a huge black EP90 streak all down her back...
The coolest shadiest spot at our house was under a temporary resident 2A... SWMBO not impressed. EP90 smelling carpet and side of sofa. So far the clean-up has taken nearly 3 hours and the dog still stinks of EP90 after two washes...
Now I know what those poor people feel like cleaning up sea birds after an oil spill. :thud
Land Rover banished to my garage.
-
Absolutely
after 25 years of total neglect started the 2and a quarter . pumped fuel from a can after priming the sight glass, pushed oil to the front oil cooler pipe ( diverted to the filler pipe 0 removed the fan belt to bypass the seized alternator and she ran as smooth as a nut
no knocking no missing farting or belching .
happy days

Random pic from internet. Just search for backwards clock. My sister's kitchen clock is one, so I knew they existed.
You would have been 20 years ago :stars where did they go? It was around then I wanted an online nom de plume. It's been used on multiple totally unrelated fora including this one.

Got round to fitting the replacement fuel pump after my attempt to fix the non return valve on the original one failed. Have to say fixing the nuts onto the studs into the engine block is a b.^&%$£ of a job. Tried a combination of working from below using a socket (3/8 socket set) and an open end spanner from above, was only managing 1 flat at a time and it took ages. Anybody any helpful tips for next time, please shout out.
On the positive side, the Landy fired up once I'd manually primed the new pump.

Resealed the roof vents. Hopefully less water coming through the roof. :shakeinghead

Fitted my axle and springs back on after the long process of cleaning it all up that started late last year.
New dampers, bearings, seals and brake lines etc.
It's all rather heavy!
Few washers missing and I couldn't remember which bolt went on the top shackle spring hanger, the tapered one or the non tapered one ???
Oh and a new-to-me diff as my original is still in a box in bits...

Grover was used as "eye candy" to draw attention for a farmer's market and vintage / craft market. Couldn't miss him from the road and he did draw attention. You could say it was a dry run for the upcoming 4th of July festivities as well.
-
Changed the plugs to the correct type Denso W16ES-U which for reason I had in a drawer, used but good. Swopped from Champion N12Y which are for 8:1 engine. Refitted the home made capacitor discharge ignition system and went for a run. Some whine from the overdrive mainly at 40mph +. With it out it's quiet. This has been discussed a lot on the forum and I think its just gears finding their new meshing points.
MOT due Wednesday.

I checked the fuel tank 109" rear. Found no fuel, just an orange sludge and the gauze blocked. See picture.

More door seal fitting - very satisfying.
Went to fit the passenger (LH) door - gap was too tight. >:D
Shielder chassis and a Rob Owen bulkhead with SP Panels doors. Plenty of opportunity for a big tolerance stack there. Managed to shim the bulkhead forward, but the gap between bulkhead and outrigger was huge. I had to ditch the standard outrigger bolt and fit an M12 x 200 bolt instead. All sits well and lines up now, but if I had more time, I'd be trying to find out why the LH bulkhead outrigger is in the wrong place... I also think that the door itself might be slightly oversize so I've had to compensate for that.
Aside from that, I have to say that the chassis is very good and everything else lines up perfectly.
Not ideal, but a successful day in the end.

Not exactly Series 2 but related, repairing my "landrover" "film director" ex MoD seats, bought as a "lot" from Withams a while back. Of the 5, 4 were usable, one was damaged, bent. One of the usable ones had a torn seat. I decided to make 4 good ones from the 5...
I'd noticed that several had canvas seats/backs, the remainder some sort of very similar looking nylon. Anyway, dismantling the torn canvas one needed a screwdriver and a 7/16th spanner on the "hinge" bolts. Went to take the nylon seat off the bent one....and found it was M8. I suppose I should have guessed the more recent ones would be "modern".
( Hey, it was a quiet day...)
-
Finished painting the rear quarter panels to match the reskin-ed back door, just need to paint the rest of her.
-
Collecting bricks, unfortunately the trailer has too many land rover bits piled in it :thud I was surprised at how little difference there was with 400kg in the back.
-
Removed one spark plug - the colour was fine, so put it back in.
Now for the front springs, getting a bit stiff. Cleaned them up, they are now hanging with the dampers removed ready for some squirty motor bike chain grease.
-
I finally got around to fettling the carburettor today, it had been quite 'on/off' from the throttle & running rich and smoky which is a bit embarrassing in todays green climate!
First off I found the idle mixture screw did nothing and the manifold vacuum at idle was 10", also the gaskets under the carb looked a bit iffy (I sprayed easy start around but couldn't find any leaks though - maybe it's too old and lost it's volatility?).
So I replaced the three gaskets under the carb, gave the carb a clean where accessible and went for a test run - still poor.
Then I took the lid off the carb cleaned and blew through anything I could see, checked the O ring and put it back together.
Now the idle mixture screw had an effect on the engine so I set up for a nice idle at @600rpm, which gave 20" vacuum.
A quick blast down the A36 and a pootle through the village and it feels much nicer.

Managed to get my SP Panels doors to fit properly... Happy with the result, but between a new bulkhead, new chassis and new doors, this took some adjusting.

I can definitely sympathise! I've just done the same with mine - new chassis, new doors, repaired and galvanised bulkhead. Took some levering, shimming and swearing to get it all into place :thud

MOT time. Passed with one small advisory, slight weep from the steering box. I suppose they had to find something 😄 Otherwise all ok.

Fitted my replacement for my failed texmagna.
Ordered on Monday from www.carbuilder.com/uk/heavy-indicator-dip-horn-stalk-assembly-500mm (http://www.carbuilder.com/uk/heavy-indicator-dip-horn-stalk-assembly-500mm)
Simple enough to fit and doesn’t look to modern.

I found out that Michelin XZL tyres don't age well..... Drove back 60 miles up the M5 from Bridgewater with a regular dunk... dunk changing with road speed and me thinking a failing UJ. Propshaft removed, all smooth. Tyres less so. Bought these from a member here about 4 years ago and put on GEU about 2 years ago. The tyre age on the tyre wall is 2001 so in fairness, it's me, and justifies why tyres are recommended to be changed after 10 years from manufacture.
Gave me quite a fright when I saw the cause of the dunk dunk. Glad they are tubed..... :agh
