Okay, me and my dad (Sankey, in case you couldn't guess) went to look at this one in the week with absolutely no idea what we were going to find. What we found was a nice straight early 109, with some non-standard running gear. Had a look, said thank you and off we went. Only on the way home did I look up the registration on DVLA to be greeted with September 1958 - whoa! This just got a lot more interesting.
Anyway after a bit of digging it was decided we would have it so went down this morning to do the deal. What we appear to have bought is a very early 59MY home market petrol - chassis number 93. However it is fitted with a honking great Perkins diesel (unsure which one) and what we think are heavy-duty ENV axles. We think this because attached to said axles are a set of One Ton rims and 9.00x16 tyres!!!
It was sort of bought on a whim as there is no paperwork, but while I wandered off to look at the seller's aeroplane project (!) Terry did some digging around in the junk filling the truck, and chanced upon a brown leather satchel - being the nosey *&%^$ he is he forced it open only to find the original VIN plate lying inside.
No doubt I am going to have many questions about the provenance of the bits, but in the meantime enjoy the pics :)

Just been chatting with your dad about this, seems entirely possible the entire undercarriage is off a 1 Ton 109" with the earlier body grafted on. It would need more digging to be sure though, it's too early for factory ENV axles (pretty sure they were 1963/4 onwards only) and would be interesting to check the chassis details. Could just be a bit of a bitsa but you never know. I'm not aware of the long spring mounts existing prior to 1960 either.

Out of curiosity, what makes a 109 a one ton? Link?

Big wheels/ground clearance and a lower ratio gearbox?
I'd like to know too.

I think one ton`s came along in the late 60`s .
9.00 x 16 Tyres , 6.5" wide wheels , lower range transfer box , extended shackles and .......that's all I can remember without referring to the James Taylor book.

Sorry for hanging on this post, just one question ..
Does anyone know if the Santana Cazorla also uses a very slow gearbox?
I have a friend who has a Cazorla, and his gearboxes are REALLY VERY SHORT. And this with 750x16 and without connecting the low ratio.
