How many Series 3 6 pots were made?
« on: June 17, 2022, 09:05:08 AM »

Out of interest, how many S3s left the factory with the 6 cylinder? And was it more or less than the Series 2?

I couldn't find much when doing a quick google at work

https://www.lrfaq.org/FAQ.3.LR_data.html

there is this website, unsure how factual it is, but doesnt seem to have series 3 6 pot numbers, only the 1 ton 6pot numbers

might be a good start to finding more information though

It would have been way more than the IIA sixes, as the series III six cylinder was in production for much longer. Doubtful a total will ever be known as the series III ran over three different chassis sequences (the initial separate sequences, the combined, and then VIN tags)

Hi,

It's just possible that information is indexed in "Workhorse of the World".

Were all One-Tons fitted with 6-pots?

I once found a dead "cherry picker" in a field, with a 6-pot. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the owner.

Did they ever make a 6-pot SWB?

All 1 Tons had the 2.6 aside from 22 2.25 petrols all built as TACR1 fire tenders. None were diesel.

No 88" sixes were made by the factory.

Were any 3.0 6 pots factory fitted to LWB series or all 2.6 ???

OT but in the late 1980's at the Anglesey vintage rally I saw a New 2.6 Land Rover engine in its packing case offered for sale in the auto jumble section, I think it was about £300, it was sill there late on the second day, wish I had bought it but it seemed at lot of money then  :thud

Anyone on here bought it?
Some years on a chap some miles away had a 6 pot in a 86" I did wonder if it was the same engine...

There were no official 3 litre sizes but no doubt some were done for testing or as specials for managers.
Over the years the six was put into most variants of Land Rover by enthusiasts before the V8 became readily available.

According to James Taylor's book on the Series 3 it appears that 25,317 6 pot Series 3 were made.

Is that utilities or including station wagons? The figure probably doesn't include the ones built after the chassis sequences got combined.

It's all 6:pots, station wagons included. There were 3,856 station wagons built including export and CKD. Chassis numbers 946 to 950 inclusive.

So far as I know nobody has totalled up the combined system, after 1976ish where the prefix changed and the numbers counted up.

If you carefully read the June issue of CLR this year you couldn't miss on page 6 the story of a 1969 12 seaters factory fitted with the P5 3L but with the standard head for just an extra £40.
I don't know whether you can believe everything you read in the magazines but according to this it happened.

See this about a 3L prototype in a 2b FC
