Making the most of a dishwasher and being single
« on: January 09, 2021, 07:13:58 PM »

I am just wondering, having seen various other mentions. I have two hubs that have been cleaned in the parts washer but retain a residual coating of grease. I also have a diff that I am going to take the caked grease off.

Will I damage the diff if I put it in the dishwasher to clean throughly before painting? I am thinking of the crown wheel etc. Would the heat or complete stripping of oil damage it? I can’t see what would damage on the hubs.

Thanks

Can't see there'd be any harm - get it oiled straight away, use WD-40 to dispel any last traces of water (the D/W heats and dries after the washing cycle) turn the diff over and then well oil with EP90.

That said you could do a pretty good job with a pressure washer on the cases - more so it you have a hot water supply and a detergent additive.

You want to get the steel as hot as possible so that it dries off quickly. If your oven is clean and big enough, taking it out of the dishwasher, shaking off the trapped water in gear teeth etc and then straight in a pre-heated low temperature oven, ideally with fan assist, will do a good job of preventing flash rusting. Straight out and oil it as Wittsend says. Many of my parts have been cleaned in an ultrasonic bath. Before I had a heated one, I used to run them under the hot tap after cleaning and they would then dry off very quickly.

That dishwasher is in better condition than my kitchen one - the trays have lost most of their plastic. But it still won't pack up - when it does, then get a new one and put the old (repaired) one in the workshop.

Dentman I have safely single. The parts cleaned well and were rust proofed straight away. The pots I did straight after didn’t smell of oil so I shouldn’t have any health issues either.

Safe of such dangers but thank you for the concern.

You are a lucky man. My mother came home early one evening and found my first LR gearbox in pieces in the dishwasher. 30 years on I can still hear her shouting at me...

My mum once hit me ‘playfully’ over the head with a frying pan and then blamed me for months for ruining her pan as the don’t meant the eggs went to the side. Funny things mums!

Sorry, but I have to ask.
Why, being single, would you need a dishwasher if not to clean car components?
