Six appeal.... Show us your Land Rover six pots!
« on: January 14, 2021, 12:29:13 PM »

I know there are some members here with six cylinder versions of Series Land Rovers....

I reckon some of us others members would love to see pictures of these beasts! Don't hold back  :RHD

What do they look like under the bonnet? Inside the cabin?  Underneath etc...?

What are the things that set them apart from their lowly 4 cylinder brethren? Fact us up!

Different bulkhead, updated brakes with servo, different e fine, exhaust, fuel tank at rear on all models, gearbox 4" further back, different gear lever, different gearbox tunnel.

What happened to CASPA?  The Carawagon and Six Pot Association?  That forum had lots of information and photos on it.  Does the database still exist?  Could it be revived and incorporated into this forum?

A couple of engine shots included some from her restoration.

Remarkable how similar looking they are to the 2.0 litre series one engine. Never occurred to me that the 6 cylinder would be an IOE engine.

More burbling than you needed to hear:

General check after my first-ever engine rebuild, aside from model airplanes. Ten (!) years ago (it wasn't "just" water vapor, there was a good dose of unburned fuel in that, too!):

Here's the 2L for comparison, also 5 (!) years ago. Time flies!:

And here's a 1973 six I had as second owner, direct from a fire department, with 11,000 miles, before I realized that I liked my hinges to stand proud.

That’s certainly one description for it.  :-X

I just hope it is all good when I need it back together as can’t imagine that’s an easy to obtain spare part if it’s not.

I love my 6 (most of the time!) and I'm glad they are starting to see a bit more love - a lot more people seem to be wanting to reinstall them. I do love an inline 6 in anything really, they are so smooth and sound superb, possibly even better than a V8 (controversial I know!).

I'll attach a photo I have shared before of my unfinished engine bay post Weslake head install. Some stuff has changed a little since then (it's certainly nowhere near as clean). There's still loads to do. There's always all those temporary solutions that you keep meaning to come back to and sort properly... you can probably spot a few!

I've heard that parts were a particular concern with the 6  banger   Is that true?

Only when compared to the 2.25, which I think is the same with many aspects of the 2.6. People have said they are unreliable and not quite as robust, but to be honest I think that is largely due to the 2.25 being so tolerant of lack of maintenance and service which the 2.6 isn't quite as tolerant to.
There are still lots of NOS 6 cylinder parts about, they do come up fairly regularly. The family of 6 cylinder IOE engines were used in cars too of course, so the P4 and P5 engines both share components and these are pretty well supported in terms of parts (I use John Wearing for all my 2.6 bits). Some LR specific bits like the exhaust manifold can be hard to find now but it's not an insurmountable problem.

Earlier on Craggle was struck by the similarities to the S1 engine, he ought to look at the Rover 60 car engine (essentially a S1 with an alloy head).  That is just a 4 cylinder version of the 2.6 6 cylinder.  The Rover 60 engine goes really well in a land rover.  I ran IOE 4 cylinder engined land rovers for more than 15 years and they were very reliable but were from an age when maintenance was king.  In fact with series land rovers most problems seem to be caused by poor maintenence, they are in comparative terms maintenance intensive and that seems not to fit with more modern motoring.  Our 59 diesel has done over 350000 miles on its original gearbox and is still going strong but my brother in law was meticulous in his oil changes.  He got over 250000 miles out of its original 2L diesel engine.
