The capstan winch on mine is fitted to a base plate with 6 x M8 bolts going horizontally into rivnuts fitted into the front cross member.
Then 6 more nuts and bolts vertically into the front bumper. It seems fairly solid.
The plate is shown in the attached.
Hope this helps

The standard front bumper & its mountings are not strong enough for any but the smallest of winches. All the LR approved front mounted ones  use No 2  cross member  ( Under the front panel) for the main attachment point . Mayflower did make a stronger front bumper but it did not alter the rear mounting requirement . Pic of the LR hydraulic with Mounting plate no 57 which was attached to No  2 cross member with 6 fixings

My series one has evidence that a capstan winch was once fitted. The front chassis crossmember has been drilled right through in 4 or 5 places and long bolts fitted through the crossmember from the engine side.
There is then a number of holes in the top of the bumper for the mounting plate and more holes close to the bumper for the cast fairlead brackets.

Craig.

It seems surprising that the LR recommendation was to attach the winch into that crossmember just with rivnuts but I guess the force isn’t trying to pull the rivnuts out forwards, it’s a twisting force trying to pull them vertically up the crossmember.

My electric winch is mounted to a big lump of L shaped metal with rivnuts to the crossmember and 4 bolts through the front bumper. It’s had some big forces pulling through it and it’s not fallen off.

 :cheers

Some series one chassis have tubes welded through the cross member for through bolts which seems the ideal situation . The relevant chassis part numbers are in the parts book and the through tubes if you want separately
