Avon Rangemasters - do tubeless versions exist?
« on: August 08, 2019, 09:10:00 PM »

Do tubeless Avon Rangemasters exist? I'm struggling to find an answer even on Avon's own website they don't specify.

Various places are selling them 'brand new' without any mention of needing tubes (including Blackcircles) which made me think that they are being produced as modern tubeless tyres.

Having ordered a set with fitting included, the (reputable) company I bought them from are now querying the fitting of them as they may need tubes.

Any ideas where I can find a definitive answer before having them delivered?

Thanks,
Patrick

I would have thought they'd need tubes...if I were fitting them to my motor I'd 100% put tubes in them, I'm not a fan of land rovers on tubeless tyres, but then again I'm a prejudiced old git !  :-X

Oh dear - I'd have thought the supplier would just be able to look on the sidewall and read - should say "Tubeless" or "Tube Type" or "Tubeless - May be used with tube".

Hope they can sort it out before delivery  :stars

It seems to be difficult to find this info, even on Avon's own website.

However, I did find this page HERE on the Avon site, saved one of the images (attached) and enlarged it, and it definitely says "TUBE TYPE" on the sidewall   :thud

Hopefully they can cancel the order - looks like you'll be choosing a different tyre.

Robin just beat me to it. I was outside looking at Dormy's Rangemasters which definitely have 'Tube Type' embossed on them. Doesn't actually answer your question but hope it helps.

Mine also have "Tube Type" on the sidewall.

Often wondered what makes them tube or not. Do the side walls leak air if no tube fitted? Could you use a tyre sealer and fit them tubeless? Is it worth me carrying a spare tube so if I get a puncture and find myself in a tyre place I can produce a new tube for them as I guess it unlikely they will have one in stock these days...?

Likely to be , it's inner liner construction being different to tubeless is the reason for them  still being of listed as a tubetype tyre.It is certainly worth carrying a tube in case of a problem, i would hope that one of the big nationals, would tell you the name of an independent tyre company who could fit a tube if the needs arise.I can remember many years ago buying some Rangemasters for my 110 V8 HCPU they were stamped TUBELESS.A call to Avons tech place came back with the reply of do not fit without tubes, i would have to say if i found a set again marked the same then a phone call to Avon would clear up which way to go.

Really - it seems strange that they produce them as tubeless, then advise you to fit tubes, unless they thought you weren't fitting them to tubeless rims   ???

Thanks all,
I've not managed to find any references online to them being tubeless - so I'll see what the company says after asking them to double check - and if they require tubes I'll cancel the order and pick different tyres.

I have bought a set very recently and they are tube type. I'm not aware of them being available as tubeless.

Aren't there tubes in your existing tyres?

Patrick is going tubeless - using a spare set of rims I had.

Tubeless is the future   ;)  :neener

Well after a few emails back and forth, it seems Avon Rangemasters always require tubes - at least the ones that are being manufactured at the moment do.

If anybody else wants them, when my cancellation goes through they will probably be available again here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162230062937 for about £110 each.

Back to the drawing board for me, still hoping for a tubeless future though!

Thank you for all the replies.
