A recce for the planned "run out" on the 19th.  First off, the Battle of Sheriffmuir, Nov 1715, Jacobite troops heading south from Perth, clash with Hanoverian "Government" troops sent to block them reaching Stirling.... then a couple of miles down the road the "Atlantic Wall", concrete copies of the Normandy defences,  set up for troops to practise the D-Day landings, then the other side of the A9, Ardoch Fort, one of the largest Roman fortifications in Scotland, part of their multiple attempts to seal off the Highlands from the good ground to the south & east.

Looks a good run out there Gene Plenty to see and history too. Pity I'm working that day and the distance I'd have to travel.

Applied tintable Raptor coating to the lower section of the bulkhead and under the seat box. Inner wings are next on the list for this next weekend.

Went to put new clear side light lenses on. The old ones had gone opaque. Then i hit a snag. The plastic lug you tighten the screw into disintigrated.Went to source another fitting out the shed. This time metal so took the old one out and fitted it.

Dropped the oil pan(sump). Cleaned it thoroughly and painted the outside.
Then I stripped the gasket and any residue from the block.
Pumped petrol through the bolt holes and then blasted them with the air hose.
Did the same  using brake cleaner.
Cleaned all the bolts similarly.
Ready to reinstall the pan when the paint is dry.

Question?  Should I use some blue locktite on the bolt threads when I reinstall or just torque them to spec?
I think the original gasket was installed with hylomar on the block which may have helped to keep the bolts somewhat tight.

The tubular rivets were waiting for me when I got home tonight so I assembled one of my vent controllers. Due to a mix up, I have ended up with aluminium rivets rather than the plated steel but I think they will be fine - They were free, so musn't grumble :tiphat

I'm about to do the same job.
Waiting for the sump gasket to arrive.
I shall be using Blue Hylomar to "stick" the gasket to the sump, then lightly grease the surface that's next to the block.
I won't be bothering to Blue Hylomar the screws in their threads.

Persuaded my broken top steering bearing out of the column with some gentle beckoning, WD40 and a bit of Allen key + vice-grip abuse. No sign of the ball bearings - presumably they've gone to the Great Ball Bearing Hall in the Sky, and definitely not trying to find their way into my steering box :whistle (I did find a few knocking around the footwell, so maybe it'll all be fine)

New part arrives on Monday, I wonder will I have as much fun trying to fit it?

I have a leak from the rear diff, plus the rear springs need a serious looking at. So to do both jobs, I'm removing the axle and springs so I can redo the diff gasket and seal in comfort.

Undoing one of the U bolts - it snapped :agh I got out quickly from underneath. The rest of the nuts on that side are protesting as I remove them. I think the other side 'might' be OK, as I replaced the strap protector.

I have new U bolts in stock.

Unless, you know the U-bolts are very recently new - just angle grind the U-bolts - off
Be prepared for the loud "snap" as they are freed off.
Not worth trying to re-cycle used U-bolts.

Fit new and going off excess thread after a test drive and re-check of tightness.

Checking over the Landie for next weekends run out with Gene. All the oils okay, U bolts on the new springs nipped up slightly, set the tickover slightly quicker as the charge light was flickering, then checked the brake fluid, oh shot! nearly empty....
Why? Checked all around the master cylinders, all dry, checked in the footwell, swimming in brake fluid! Bearmach CB master cylinder bought three years ago only back in service last year. Grrrrr.
Will need to repaint the footwell again after the last one failed after 15 years. :'(
But it shows, it's good the check the brake fluid regularly or 'NAY BRAKES'.
So as Gene has said the run out is on tarmac roads I'll have to resort to the SEAT Ateca. Hey Ho.

It should not need locktite, normal tightening should be sufficient - suggestion would be to use a similar technique to tightening down a head - doing it in stages, across the piece to get an even tightness all round ?

Not so much "today" as "this weekend".  Friday afternoon, a 125 mile trip down to Annan for the Borders Camping weekend - a superb campsite right on the beach looking out across Solway Firth to the hills of the Lake District, fish&chips, setting world to rights around the fire etc, a cracking days Green-Laning in the North Pennines on Sat, BBQ and final details of "setting the world right" agreed, back home yesterday, probably 350 miles all in. No mechanical issues, touched 60mph on the way home, brake-light switch needs replaced... genuine part ordered from Blanchards.

Top Marks to Phil and the Borders crew for a great weekend, good company and stunning scenery.
