Paddock galvanized rear step. How to mount?
« on: January 06, 2021, 12:13:45 AM »

Can anyone help?  I bought a galvanized 1/2 rear step from Paddock for my '65 109 5 door.  I don't see any discernible method to mount it short of drilling two holes in my rear crossmember.  Even then it would not fit well.
thanks for any help

Do you mean one of these ???

You need to drill and bolt up to the rear cross member.

They are designed to bolt up between a standard UK/Euro style tow ball and its mounting plate. On Land-Rovers that’s usually some form of drop plate.

These hole centres are the ones to fix to , or with a drop plate if you have one . Borrowed the picture from another thread

It's a bit dark and I stuck a rubber pad on top, but like this.

Ok,  As you can see I have removed the two large lower bolts, but the two smaller top bolts are turning, and I don't think they are coming out,  Any advise please?
Thanks

Do you need to remove the drop plate?

Mount the step to the rear of the lowermost set of holes on the plate.

The two top bolts should go all the way through the box section, so the nuts should be accessible from the forward face of the cross member. True, they may be so tight against the top flange that a socket won't fit. It could be a case for an open ended spanner, or even a flat screwdriver jammed in the space around the nut to prevent it turning.

Agree, mount it to the lower set of holes on the drop plate.
Not much point mounting it direct to the crossmember as it will be too high, may as well just step in in one go.

I think you can still get the proper folding steps for the rear if you wanted to keep it more original looking.

Why not just fit the paddocks type step with the tow ball bolts on the drop plate as this is often/usualy below the rear cross member ???

thanks Craig,  I would prefer that but not sure where to source that step.  I will check into the suppliers unless you can suggest where I can get one.

The Optional Equipment catalogue give the rear step as 605934, for S2A & S3, but warns it is not suitable for Station Wagons, without saying why (perhaps something to do with rear mounted fuel tanks?). I cannot see a listing for a rear folding step for Station Wagons.
Side steps are a different part number, and will fit 'anything'.

Craddocks list stock under that number, but it will be wise to check before sending money :-)
'Italy' also lists stock on auction: #401805537823, but you won't like the price!

Regards.

I seem to remember that bit about the step not being suitable for SW. Only thing I could think of was the rear mounted spare wheel interfering with the step if it was left down and the door closed, assuming you have the low mounted wheel as in my photos above. It is close to the tyre but does clear.

The 109" SW's have more or less the same cross member, SWB models have the same chassis as standard models and the rear step fits the 109" perfectly even with the rear fuel tank.

I didn't realised they were hard to find now though, Craddocks list them around £150!
