OT Creosote
« on: July 11, 2021, 11:45:17 AM »

I know this is off topic but I also know how much you all like doing things the ‘old school way’
I have recently needed to remove some old post and rail fencing on the farm to do some remodelling work. The posts and rails were put up by the previous owner in 2001 so have been in 20 years. They are the proper pressure creosoted type and the photo attached shows their condition after 20 years in the ground.
If ever I needed a good reason to fork out the extra for this type of treated timber then this is it. Needless to say I will be reusing these and will buy new ones despite the expense when and where I need them!
Try doing this with tannalised 🙄

Creosote is still available for 'commercial uses': https://www.creosotesales.co.uk/

We still use it at the railway on things like wagon underframe internal timbers, and floorboards (50:50 with old engine oil).

Might be worth giving them a fresh coat before re-using them, to get an extra few years!

You should find they also sell "proper" lightbulbs, mine does. - but as we are "off-grid" for electricity I've swapped all our lighting to low wattage LEDs, the thought of running a 100w "Big Light" in the house is not something I'd consider any more The "standing load" of the house, lights, computers, fridges and sewage treatment plant is +/- 300w. We can handle that on a nice day using just the input from the solar panels. When the battery storage ( 24x2v "traction" batteries) runs down to 60% the clever box fires up the diesel generator to recharge the batteries.

Paint stripper is another "commercial only" game, you will not find anything like "Synstryp" in B&Q !  Available on the internet though....

Yeah I bought a 20 litre drum to recoat before I reuse them.
I buy all my proper creosoted timber from Calders and Grandidge who supply excellent quality timber ( at a price!) 😃👍

Calders and Grandidge
I have used them for hardwood sleepers to use for wagon underframe timbers - one wagon solebar weighs about ¼ Ton!
