Richards do have their own identification numbers on their chassis, it indicates various things like which batch of steel was used, who cut it and who welded it together.

Hi Peter,

Do you know if Richards numbering system includes who the chassis was delivered to?

Or in other words, will DVLA accept the unorthodox  "provenance".

OK, I should ask Richards, but I'm guessing that other's here may be interested.

Hopefully their record show who it went to but a vehicle or chassis could change hands numerous times before the information is needed.

You often see Richards chassis for sale where someone has bought it for a project and either hasnt the cash to complete or the task becomes too daunting.  Ther may be no paper trail there.

I think it is incumbant on the purchaser to be able to prove their title to the chassis.

I know of more than one  land rover where the owner has had a chassis swap done by a professinal garage and has been told that there is no need to stamp the new chassis.

If I was paying to have the job done only a garage that is prepared to stamp the chassis would get the job.  I know for example local to me Leaf Sprung Landys stamp replacement chassis when the do a swap but they also MOT every retoration even if the car is MOT exempt.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for comments.

I think I can show that the purchaser of the chassis, and the owner of the car were the same person, when the chassis was purchased.

But the story peters out after that ... and it's not my story to tell.
