Not today but on Friday.....

Broke it  :stars

Or at any rate the gearbox. Died going up the hill at SO401915 on the west side of the Long Mynd. Reversing back a couple of hundred yards to the previous passing place was no fun! Even with a servo, three sets of trailing shoes doesn't do a lot of stopping on a 20% slope. The handbrake held just fine but I didn't want to chance cooking it!

No 1st, 2nd or 3rd gears so I suspect something nasty involving the layshaft. Towed on up the hill, eventually, by my sister's partner's Disco (he got well lost trying to find me) where we turned the whole outfit round at the entrance to the Midland Gliding Club. Finally drove home in convoy with my choice of gears being 4th low, 4th low overdrive, 4th high (finally managed this change on the move- kerrrrunch!) and 4th high overdrive. Rather a large gap between "2nd" and "3rd"!

Some serious thinking to do now- do I chance just sticking a (possibly dodgy anyway) recon 2A box behind the 200Tdi, splash out on a five speed conversion and flog the old overdrive, go back to petrol (possibly a 2.5 on a 2A box). Not up to serious DiY these days so £££ whatever  >:(

Might (I say might) just be a collapsed front bearing on the lay-shaft. If you are prepared to swap gearboxes then fixing this is not hard or expensive. It only needs the bell-housing removed to replace the bearing and clean any broken bits out. Why not start a thread in 'Workshop Wisdom' before making decisions about the "Dodgy Rebuilt" gearbox etc.

Been to collect my body panels from storage. Hopefully start to work on them next week. I will apologise in advance for all the questions coming your way.

Decided that the outdoor workshop might be a nicer working environment for stripping, cleaning and reassembling the transmission brake.
