Strictly speaking, last month (yesterday) but.....

Reconnected the fuel gauge sender and checked the reversing light feed from dashboard switch to RHS rear connection box was working. All a bit odd but leftover snags from the gearbox replacement job last year. Just got the roofrack mounted spots and electric fan to sort now.

All of the rear lights and the fuel gauge sender lines now run in a single trailer cable running along the top of the RH chassis leg to the connection box instead of a ragbag mix of said trailer cable and individual loose wires. Don't fret- in the spirit of old Landy wiring, all the old loose wires are still there as part of the vehicle's history  :whistle

Also added a couple of self tappers to hold the rear end of the driver's door lock to the back side of the door- the tabs for the fixings on the inside face of the door have sheared and a quick fix was desirable.

Treated myself to a drive in the sunshine afterwards to pick up some essential supplies  :RHD

Found my handbrake shoes were covered in oil. But it doesn't look like the rear seal on the transfer box is leaking, all around it is dry.

Most Series handbrakes seem to be covered in oil. What's surprising is the handbrake continues to work and hold the vehicle on all but the steepest slopes.

Take the shoes and soak in a bucket of Daz overnight. They should be re-usable.

If they are rivetted on a good warming from the blowlamp drives the oil to the surface, it may even catch fire and burn off.  Then give them Alan's overnight treatment.

Dont try the blowlamp bit with bonded linings, it melts the glue.

I think the riveted shoes will contain asbestos - be careful. Handbrake shoes tend to have been in service for 60/50 years and will almost certainly contain asbestos. Glued on linings are probably safe. Do people still bother with riveting shoes ?

The asbestos warning is actually a very good one, thanks. Hopefully the oil will prevent the dreaded fibres from becoming airborne but I think I'll just replace the shoes. Quite a few of the rivets are loose anyway. Are Britpart ones fine or should I splash out on mintex ones? I don't see where anyone could go badly wrong with making handbrake shoes but someone may have a horror story :agh

Cheers,

Malcolm

Also today I took the transfer box bottom cover off to try and cure a bad oil leak.

Britpart shoes will be fine for this application.

Don't forget to chamfer the ends of the shoes so they don't snatch when you apply the brake - even though you are only supposed to apply the brake when stationary. Do both ends to save fuddling your brain as to which end is the leading edge  :stars

Starting on the rebuild of yet another gearbox. This one looks as though its spent the last 30 years in the corner of a farmyard. I bought it on eBay knowing it had a broken layshaft. It took me three hours to get down to bare metal! The casing cleaned up nicely and even better after I got the soda blaster out. Had a bit of fun getting the layshaft bearing seat out though.
Rebuild tomorrow. I'll then start on the transfer box...

Changed oil, filter and oil pressure switch.
No oil up arm, for once.
Got oil in garage floor as forgot to allow for different trajectory missing tray as oil slowed. Rookie mistake.
Cleaned breathers.

One trick I've heard of is to put a plastic bag over the filter bowl once you have loosened the bolt.
You then undo the bolt through the plastic and catch the filter bowl in the bag.

No oil will be split ...
