Don't do any dismantling until it's been inspected.

Hi,

i just tried an MOT History checK   ....   "THERE IS A PROBLEM TRY AGAIN" ... which suggests that it is probably not also adorning a modern car, but could be nailed to something that is VED exempt. But probably isn't, else DVLA would have frowned at you.

What happens if you remove the registration plates ... and declare it is a "barn find"? I think you will lose that registration, and be given an age related plate(all else being correct)  Er .. surely that should be the legitimate process, even with the registration plate attached.

Of course, life could get interesting, if somebody else is driving round with your chassis number.

Whatever, do it legally, and do it through the club.

One of my mates made up a chassis number when registering his vehicle, pre-DVLA days. It's come back to bite him. It's been off the road for at least 20 years, but is still valuable as a classic, and the registration letters spell a boy's name, followed by three numerics ... no suffix. On the other hand, I've just heard he now has an unpleasant,  I think terminal, medical condition.

An ill wind ... I wonder if it would fit in my garage ... and do I really want 100mph 15cwt van?

602

PS. I haven't been officially told about my mate's illness, but we are still in contact with a mutual friend. Perhaps I should let him know that if you have been given a short life expectancy ... you are are automatically entitled to ATTENDANCE ALLOWANCE.

Just found this old thread, did the OP manage to retain the original number??

I've also just found this thread, and bought the vehicle in question.

Looking at some of the replies I fear this thread got out of hand rather quickly. The chassis plate etc has always been present on the vehicle, it has a copy of the original reg record and a heritage certificate, so its identity was never in question, just a question of obtaining its original number.

As of yet there's been no breakthrough with being able to find any documentation to tie the numberplate/chassis number together which the dvla will need to issue its original plate rather than an age related plate. So i'm holding off on applying (through the club) until ive exhausted all avenues, otherwise it will just have to be accepted that it will end up on an age related plate. I'm currently trying the V888 route.

As a club member have you spoken to our VRO Peter ???
[email protected]

He can advise you of any pitfalls. Going it alone with the DVLA could end in tears.

I won't be going it alone don't worry, and will contact Peter myself, the previous owner was already following his instructions. The next idea suggested to him was the V888 route, hence I've filed an information request with them to see if they have a digital copy of the old buff log book. Having dealt with the DVLA and owners clubs with previous vehicles I've owned, I know to follow the clubs vro and approach the dvla in the right way.
