Frustrating leak in the roof! 😖
« on: September 30, 2020, 04:34:20 PM »

My 109, recently fitted with a truck-cab and my daily runaround at the moment has got a leaky roof. It’s getting in under the joint for the roof skin to the frame. This is riveted all around and obviously the sealant is past it’s best.

I’ve tried a few doses of Captain Tolley leak finder/sealer, but it has not cured it. Next stage will be to mask it up and apply a smear of Tigerseal around the entire joint of the roof.

Anyone got any other suggestions to fix it?

Carefully examine it, particularly on the corners, mine had a big hole there.

Or, as it's a truck cab roof, take it off, invert it and fill with water. Then slosh around, you'll see where the leak is!

How much condensation do you get?

Hard tops can sweat very well - so well that on a damp day you start off driving - the bumps make the droplets join up - so that when you put the brakes on the drops all run forward and fall off over your legs.

Knowing it happens doesn't make it any more comfortable - but does mean that you don't spend hours looking for leaks.

Do truck cabs suffer from similar problems.  the one I had was lined with thin foam which may have prevented the problem.

I wonder if you upturned the truck cab and used something like Slosh tank sealant it would be effective  ???
It would add some soundproofing also.

It's not that big a job to separate the two, then apply a new sealant and rivet it back together. Having sufficient rivets and a compressed air rivetter helps.

Chris.

There’s a lot of rivets, so that’s plan B. I think I’ll try the sealant over the top first.

I've just done both mine with some 'liquid rubber' paint, used on flat roofs etc. I think I just got it from B&Q. You can have the rest of the tin if it is any good - it doesn't last long once opened but I only did it about three or four weeks ago. So far so good, not sure how long it'll last. In hindsight I wish I had split the roof from the gutter when I did the Carawagon, but a bit of a bit job now it's all together... hence this bodge. To be honest the gutter on that wasn't bad but the 88" one I bought out of a farmer's field and it has already been 'sealed' in the past.

Thanks Calum, but I’ve this afternoon gone over it with a bead of Tigerseal. Looks neat and not visible from ground level. Tomorrow’s weather should verify if it worked or not!
