« on: August 04, 2020, 11:07:24 PM »

My Landrover appears to have a lawnmower engine.... casting mark on the head.

Qualcast = a Derby firm just round the corner from our house in Derby.

Also, Leys cast parts for Land Rover.
Leys was next to the Baseball Ground, home of Derby County until they moved.
The football ground was a good 20 minute walk from our house.

So, I was next to Land Rover parts from birth  :wooly-jumper

They apparently also made exhaust manifolds for MG. Trademark now owned by Bosch.

Leys made my front diff, stamped Jan 1960. Someone else made the rear one which is a replacement dating from 1965.

I think your oil pump is Qualcast too!

A lawnmower engine swap would probably be an improvement over the NA diesel in my 110 :D

My dad passed his test in a Series 1 when I was very little , does that count ?
I’m hoping to come across a picture I saw years ago with him in it , may be able to get the reg no if I’m really lucky.

Funny, I was just rebuilding a water pump yesterday and was surprised that the old impeller was embossed with "QUALCAST". The other original one in my stash says "Land Rover" and the new one from Britpart has no markings.

... sometimes it's the only one out all 3 that's working!

It's also got a Suffolk Punch or Colt clutch, which I suppose could also be of Qualcast origin? I have a Suffolk mower engine for it, like the mower in the photo above, but no fuel tank or exhaust silencer for it, so at the moment I've installed an OHV Honda clone (not actually from a mower!).

My father has a very old picture of me (as a nipper) sat inside the grassbox of a mower the same as that.
Probably couldn't even get my feet in one now! :-X

I have an Atco 'Twelve' petrol lawn mower which my father bought new when I was 7 years old. It is still cutting the grass 53 years on and is the one thing I own that is the same age as Dormy (not including SWMBO !).

A lawnmower with a Land Rover engine might be of quite a beast :whistle
