All the local pumps are empty. Obviously this is pack rat panic mentality causing this, but it's got me thinking.
What else will a 2.25 diesel run on given enough preheating?
What would be your go to alternative?

You'll ruin the engine (fuel injector pump) if you try and run it on say - veggie oil (processed or not).
The CAV pump as fitted to 2 litre and 2¼ litre engines really needs dino diesel.
So, if you have one of those engines - sit it out.
They will have to get supplies moving again in the next few days or there will be civil unrest!
If you have a later engine (Tdi type) with the Bosch injector pump then you CAN run on veggie oil or waste veggie oil (precessed or not).
Expect the prices of cooking oil in the supermarkets to be hiked up :shakeinghead

Short term it'll run on kero. Long term the pump won't like it, but it'll do in a 'I can't buy diesel and have a massive tank of kero for my boiler' situation.

It should run on heating oil for a time (not legal, but needs must) ... don't thrash the engine, try a cetane booster and lubricant additive.
Veggie based oil is not advised.

There are two drums of red tractor diesel in the barn in normal circumstances I wouldn't consider using it in a road vehicle but if this stupidity lasts any length of time it is a option I suppose.

Hi,
I noticed that everybody was driving circumspectly this morning, presumably trying to save fuel.
That was until I was on the A420, about to cut across to the other side other dual carriage, into Barleyhurst Park. Gibbo will know where I'm talking about.
A three car "pile-up", only none of the cars were still in contact, if ever they were. It looked like it could have been quite spectacular.
I was able to carry on to the next roundabout, U-turn, come back, and turn into the estate. But the way off the estate was blocked by police cars, and finding an alternative exit was quite convulated..
Doh! Daughter says to come for a meal!

Back in the day, circa 1972, I knew someone who ran their 2,286 Diesel on a mix of 1 gallon of paraffin with 1 pint clean engine oil.

The Bosnians used to run VW Golfs on sump oil regularly during the siege of Sarajevo. Best mobile smokescreen generator I've ever seen - kept the snipers out of business which was always a good thing.

I advise against using red diesel, the VOSA/DVLA/Traffic Pol have started dipping tanks.
The marina where I work has stopped selling diesel to punters with Jerry cans, it goes straight into the boat or no sale.
Management are holding onto 2000litres of our (E5) petrol incase staff need it, punters can buy it if they want but it's "boaty" priced

A friend of a Land Rover owning friend allegedly ran his Land Rover on hydraulic fluid quite happily for many years when he worked in a job where he could obtain it for free. Not sure which engine he had. I believe that some modern hydraulic fluids are water based though, so I guess they wouldn't work too well!

At one time I was told if you used red diesel on the road in your vehicle the penalty was conversation of the vehicle which was only returned to you if you paid a fine equal to the market value of that vehicle :agh

Once (1990s) we were visited by a Customs team dipping the tanks of farm Landrovers.... they obviously expected to find "Red". We had two Landrovers at the time, a V8 90 and a 2.25 petrol 109....
I suspect they will have had greater luck at our then neighbours place...
In the -35c Bosnian winters we ran the Battalions 2.5na, 300Tdi (and a few "white fleet" TD5) Landrovers on aviation Kerosene, AVTUR, initially at a 50:50 mix then 100% as the weather got worse. Supposedly a slight drop in power. They ran fine. Normal Paraffin would be an expensive way to run a vehicle, even online it seems to be £2 a litre or more.

I am getting old but was there not a way to run on AVCAT. That may have just been an apprentice 'rumour' when I was running Olympus kit (guess the ship ;-) )
