Fiberglass roof in USA ??
« on: June 23, 2023, 04:53:16 PM »

Once in a while I look on ebay.com in the U.S.A. for Land Rover stuff, mostly window shopping.

I saw an ad  that's offering an "aftermarket fiberglass roof for a Series", item/ad number  354867411016

Hopefully that's enough for you to find it. It's very curious. Does anyone know it? Santana maybe?

Or has he mixed it up with a Toyota?

See if this link works.
auction: #354867411016

Not Santana - I'm sure of that. I reckon somebody has made up a mould and made it themselves or a small batch run.
I'd be interested to see how it sits on an 88 as rounded corners at the rear won't match the body. There's also a slight curve at the front.

Strange...

With those large rounded rear corners I would guess it is for an older Toyota landcruiser -- U.S. or Aussie spec. and not imported to the UK except by a few private individuals.

Regularly went greenlaning in Wales accompanied by one in the early 1990s - absolutely bombproof mechanically but it was worse than a series for getting hung up on the springs/axles in rutted going

i remember seeing a dutch civil service land rover with a rounded roof and sides like this. years and years and years ago at an auction site. though the one i saw was more 'land rover' like, with a tail gate and catflap rear

doubt I could find the image again though..

I'm guessing an Fj40 also. The only fiberglass roof on Rovers I know about were early D90's,

Just been looking at pics of my FJ40. The door profile is different at waist height on the B pillar. That wouldn't fit.

I have a recollecting of seeing one of these on a S3 from Dunsfold's at Land Rover Legends at Bicester Heritage some years ago. I can't remember the origin but have a feeling it is specifically designed for a Series truck rather adapted.

In Colombia, these fiberglass roofs are common.

It seems to me that I read many years ago in a forum in Colombia, that many Series without a hardtop arrived in the local market, and probably as a cheaper option to the aluminum roof they must have been manufactured in that country.

If you look at a sales site in Colombia, you can see several Series with this type of roof.

Not particularly relevant, I had a black fibreglass roof on my model year 1995 US Defender 90.  It was dealer or Land Rovers supplied and even had holes for the Safety Devices rollcage.  It was great, however I doubt it lasted very long.

That's interesting, a whole niche market emerged. I think it makes them look like a Scout.
