Series 2a Steering Wheel
« on: February 24, 2020, 04:44:12 PM »

Hi, am I correct to assume that this steering wheel will fit on my 1964 Series 2a? I currently have the plastic version..

As far as I know the plastic version and the wire spoke version are not interchangeable. So if currently you have fitted the plastic spoke version the one in the picture should not fit.
Is your steering wheel fixed with a nut from the top or a bolt from the side?

With this you can't go by the vehicle year of manufacture...

You have to look at the end of the steering column.
You need the earlier column that just has splines on the end.
The wheel is secured by a pinch bolt.
... and this arrangement is correct for an early 2A which your is.

The later plastic wheels are secured by a large nut (1" AF) on the end, so there are some splines and then threads for the nut.
This wheel is correct for 2As from around 1967 - IIRC.

The point being that Previous Owners could well have changed the steering columns round.

Not quite OE :-[
but you can find wire spoked wheels that will fit in a 11a column in both orginal and smaller (15" ish) diameters, not quite the same but close :whistle

Thanks all, I'll have a look at mine tomorrow and report back. The one in the picture isn't the actual one I'm looking at but it's the same type.

So, I don't have the type with the external bolt. Am I stuck with the plastic steering wheel? Clearly I'm only looking at OEM steering wheels, anything else is essentially a hate crime.  :RHD

I fitted one like this on a late 11a column, 15.5", it may be a hate crime to some but gives more stomach room and looks "like" early s2/s1 if you squint, but not ideal for the purists
These can also be found in 18" size
