Title: Ring hitch trailer security
Post by: Ndrwdz on June 17, 2021, 10:56:35 AM
I have a Scottern trailer with a ring hitch, for use behind my 88".
I just wondered what people are using for security on a trailer like this (same as a Sankey etc).

Is something like this any good?

Thanks
Andrew

Its very find any type of lock that can stand up to a cordless 18 volt angle grinder :shakeinghead

That's true, but it doesn't mean that we should do nothing

Very True and I always try to use at least 2 types of security, my thinking is the longer it takes to pinch yours they might move on to someone elses...

Why not use a wheel clamp as well, or 2 :bright-idea

If they want it, they will take it ...

If they are professional villains they will have done their homework and worked out what they need to take your stuff.

My battery powered angle grinder is much quieter than a mains powered jobbie.

True, anything you can do to slow them down helps, but is not guaranteed.

When I had a Sankey I wrapped some thick chain through the ring and fitted a heavy duty padlock. As stated, no doubt not grinder proof, but it would slow them down. It was cheap too!

Bar fitting a ground axle hook lock , a motion detector , take the wheels off, turn it upside down and cover it in camouflage netting there isn’t much that will put of a thief, if they want your stuff they will make every and all efforts to take it. Yes it’s all about slowing them down or putting them off from taking it . But at end of day it’s only secure as long as it’s not stolen .
New types power tools and vehicles capable with long reach arms to lift your vehicle of the ground over a fence wall whatever has all happened to folk just to get your item.
I not saying do nothing or give up trying to stop them , but be more awhere of how you leave your vehicle and how safe you leave it to deter theft of it or delay potential thief till your 2x4 hits them well and truly or your fig returns with there seat of there pants this is sadly what we all currently face .
CCTV cameras , alarms ,locks of different types all are useful so is watching out for suspected people going by checking out your area other similar thefts near to where you live to make you increase being watchful .
Thus is all we can do .

Yes, I had wondered about a fabric-covered chain wrapped round the hitch, it would stop it being hitched to another vehicle at least.

That and a wheel lock

Not fabric wrapping ... try an old bicycle inner tube  :first

Beware of covered chains - fabric or otherwise. In the motorcycle world many riders who use their bikes for daily commuting used to leave their fabric covered chains attached to whatever anchor point was available, this saves you from having to carry the chain with you when you leave. Then the criminals realised that because the chain is covered they could cut the chain when it was not in use and re attach the cut ends with a heavy cable tie, this was hidden by the cover. When the unsuspecting biker used the chain all that the thieves had to do was bring a set of side cutters and the chain could be removed......

I knew a company that was always losing equipment and vehicles.
One bright spark came up with the idea of putting "GPS tracker fitted" stickers to anything that could walk.
Result, virtually no losses.

Worth a try?

If you actually want to spend money (shock horror!) mini GPS trackers are available for less than a tenner, slip a PAYG (Pay as you go) SIM card in (with a bit of credit on) and you're all set.

Only problem is that for something unpowered like a trailer you have to recharge them regularly.

On the vehicle it's fairly easy to run off the battery via a transformer/modified in car charger, but just remember to use the vehicle every week or so to keep the charge up.

It won't stop something being stolen, but at least if it is you/the Police have a chance of locating it.
