12 volt Air Compressor Advice
« on: October 15, 2020, 12:54:49 PM »

Hi All,
The liitle 12v tyre inflator I got from Beardy Paul about 10 years ago has died. He won't honour the guarantee so I'm looking for a new one.

I was thinking of upgrading from the plastic box type to one of the all metal types, eg. this T-Max type... auction: #331146879743

Anyone used one or got any advice before I spend my money?

Thanks

I bought one of these for each vehicle in 2017 for about £25 each:
auction: #274329367528
TireTek Compact-Pro

They look a bit silly with the rubber tyre tread style protector, but they work well and haven't let me down yet. Comes in a decent little bag with all the useful accessories that never get used.

I picked them for the good reviews at the time, the detachable hose, and the price. I don't know if they are still available as the same product, but the internals are probably still the same in every 12v compressor in the same price range anyway.

I bought one of this sort some 6 or 7 years ago, I had a caravan at that time and the tyres needed 60psi and many would not do that but this did and works well and is very quick even when the tyre is flat :first

but came with a yellow hose, a black nylon storage bag and not Britpart branded when I bought mine

I know, shame on you Beardy Paul. I paid him a whole ten pounds for it and it’s only lasted 10 years.  :'(

My "in vehicle" compressor is even cheaper, taken from a scrapped Merc.

thats what I did - inadvertently - decided to have a spare wheel in the Fiesta as we live in the stix, and they supplied it with the pump anyway. haven't used it yet, though

Hi,

Has anybody ever rigged one of the "pocket" compressors to a storage tank? Would the Factory Inspector be interested?

Idle thought ... could a bald tyre, on a wheel, be used as a storage "tank"? What valves (IN,OUT and SAFETY) would be needed? Tubeless tyre  with two extra holes drilled in the rim the rim?  I'll get my coat.

^^^ Several of the "eazi-bleed" brake/clutch type systems use air from the spare to operate...

I’ve had a Viair 400p in my 109 for the past 15 years. Apart from a new electric lead it’s been reliable. It pumps up a 750 tyre in about 3 minutes.

Yes, I went straight out and bought a spare alloy from a breakers - very reasonably priced.
The spare sits in the wheel well in the back and only raises up the load tray by ½".

Did the same on our other Fiesta and sold the "run flat" nonsense on ebay for almost the cost of a proper wheel from a breakers.

Somewhere deep down in the small print of the small print I had the option of getting a proper spare wheel - but they didn't tell me that  :'(

Even at my age I can change a wheel faster than it takes to blow foam into a flat tyre.

Note:
The Factory Inspector or any other H&S bod ain't going to be interested what you do in your private garage )property.

I've had a T Max twin cylinder tyre inflator for some time and it's brilliant. Output of 150 litres of air per minute and when I last used it in May it  inflated a puncture 7.50 tyre sufficient to get back to a lay by where I could change the wheel.
It makes short work of Land Rover tyres and has a duty cycle of 45 minutes. It takes 45 amps so it needs to have the engine running when in use.

....particularly when an aggressive rock has taken a 9 inch slice out of the side-wall, which is what happened to some foreign tourists here last summer. Nothing was fixing that bar a new/spare tyre. The rental companies recovery truck took over 4 hours to reach them. I ferried one to Tesco to get themselves a picnic while they waited...
