Chassis reinforcements ?
« on: September 22, 2021, 02:51:08 PM »

Hi everyone.
Query..
I am doing minor repairs to the chassis of my 1966 LR 88

I have it completely disassembled, so it is easy to work on it.

In addition to repairing some small sunken areas, I would like to reinforce some areas that are more sensitive.
I already place the angle that goes in front of the firewall bracket, as the series III takes.

I will also reinforce the work that goes under the gearbox, which is the lowest part, and I will make the tradesign under the gearbox removable.
Any other suggestions ?
If you have any additional reinforcement photos it would be useful.
My chassis is in very good shape, without corrosion.

In the UK, it seems the first point to rot through is the rear cross-member. I can't but think this is due to its very poor original design, with multiple forward facing mud traps.
The best way to counter this design is uncertain, although there has been recent positive mention of an alternative design from a (now deceased) Scottish builder.

I suspect the second most efficient mud trap is between the forward fuel tank outrigger and the fuel tank.

A few years ago, when I first had experience of a 2A chassis, I was told it was normal for the vertical internal stiffeners around the bumper mounting bolts to disappear completely.

Regards.

When rear cross member replacement was on my agenda I boxed in the exposed wheel arch sections.

I also transferred what a previous owner had added, an extra piece of angle steel between the rear spring hangers,  linked to the bottom of the member to prevent the whole box section being rotated when towing.

Can I clarify - was this on a 88? (Rather than a 109).

Regards.

Thank you very much, interesting reinforcement!
Thanks for posting that photo. ¡¡

I must say that I have already completely replaced the rear crosmember, it would be interesting to add this reinforcement!
