Title: NOS. Original elephant hide material
Post by: Wijendra on August 08, 2022, 12:19:06 PM
No connection to me, having seen a number of posts about the Elephant hide material, just notice the following fleabay item that some of you looking for originality may be interested. Seems very pricey though

Looks like the Gostling family of Exmoor trim fame, if you look at the address at the bottom of the fleabay page.

Amazing this stuff is still out there.
I seem to remember Phil at Dunsfold once saying he had a roll but that may have been a figment of my imagination.

Wonder how many metres are on the roll if you wanted to buy the lot?

Craig.

  Hi guys

20 years ago when I was restoring my dads 62 Dormobile I needed just enough material to redo the drivers seat bottom, all the rest of the seats and door panels where in excellent like new condition. 42,000 miles garage stored from new
Through the Dormobile club which was very active back then Dunsfold (who had a roll of it then) was convinced to sell me just enough (1 yard) to repair my seat. I paid $120 Canadian for it and was so grateful they sold it to me otherwise everything would have had to be redone so it would all match.
The reproduction elephant hide at that time was horrible stuff.

Charles Kellogg in Washington state had a roll of it as well but would not sell any to me, he wanted the complete seat to redo, shipping a seat base down to the states just was not practical.

Now the reproduction elephant hide from Exmore is actually very nice good quality and it looks very real, when I re- did all the upholstery on the 69 Dormobile 3 years ago you could buy it by the yard, rumour has it they no longer sell it like that you have to buy the finished pieces. I have no clue if that's true or not.

I guess if you want to patch one piece to match something original maybe its worth it?

Hi genocache

That does look good. There is also a school bus seat material up here in Canada that is remarkable close to Elephant hide.
